Presidency Dismisses El-Rufai’s Claim Tinubu Wants to Extend Tenure
The Presidency has rejected former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai’s claim that President Bola Tinubu intends to cling to power beyond 2031, describing the allegation as “baseless and absurd.”
El-Rufai, during a visit by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, accused the Tinubu administration of drifting toward authoritarianism and compared the President to Cameroon’s Paul Biya. He further alleged that Tinubu’s government is centralizing power at the expense of federalism, warning that Nigeria’s democracy is under threat.
Responding, Presidential aide Bayo Onanuga said Tinubu remains committed to democracy and would step down on May 28, 2031, if re-elected in 2027. He argued that El-Rufai’s remarks reflect frustration over the declining prospects of his new party, the ADC, and suggested the former governor may need “professional counselling” over his repeated “hallucinations” about Tinubu’s political future.
