Rivers: Tinubu Lacks Power to Suspend Elected Governor, Lawmakers — Atiku
ABUJA — Former Vice President and 2023 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has condemned President Bola Tinubu over the suspension and subsequent reinstatement of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and members of the State House of Assembly, describing the move as unconstitutional.
In a statement posted Thursday on his official X handle, Atiku said there was “nothing to celebrate” in lifting the suspension, insisting the action had no legal foundation from the outset.
“Lifting the suspension of Governor Simi Fubara is nothing to cheer about. The suspension of the Rivers State Governor and the State House of Assembly was unconstitutional when it was done six months ago and is still illegal today,” he wrote.
Atiku maintained that Tinubu had no constitutional authority to suspend a democratically elected governor or lawmakers, warning that the development signaled a dangerous slide toward authoritarianism.
“President Tinubu had no power to suspend a democratically elected governor and state lawmakers. The Rivers shenanigans only signpost the dictatorship of the Tinubu administration,” he added.
His comments come less than 24 hours after Tinubu lifted the state of emergency in Rivers, directing Governor Fubara, his deputy Prof. Ngozi Nma Odu, and state lawmakers to resume office on Thursday, September 18.
