Mark Zuckerberg’s School for Underprivileged Kids to Shut Down Despite His Soaring Wealth

Mark Zuckerberg’s fortune jumped by $85 billion in 2024, yet a school he co-founded for low-income children is set to close due to financial troubles—sparking public backlash.

Launched in 2016 by Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, The Primary School in California aimed to blend education, healthcare, and social services for underprivileged families. Backed by nearly $100 million from the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI), it quickly became a lifeline for its community.

But the school never secured enough outside support and relied heavily on CZI funding. Donations also dropped from $8 million in 2022 to $3.7 million in 2023, leaving the school unsustainable. By April 2025, leaders confirmed it will close by the end of 2026.

Parents are outraged, questioning how Zuckerberg—worth over $200 billion—could allow such a vital resource to vanish. Critics say the closure highlights the limits of philanthropy when projects depend almost entirely on billionaire charity.

Meanwhile, CZI says it will shift its focus to scientific research and AI, moving away from direct community programs.
