Kemi Badenoch Sides With Trump, Slams UK’s Chagos Deal as ‘Dangerous Self-Sabotage’

UK Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch has backed former U.S. President Donald Trump in criticising Britain’s decision to cede sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius, warning that the move poses a serious threat to national and allied security.

Badenoch described the agreement as “complete self-sabotage,” arguing that paying to hand over strategic territory weakens the UK and its NATO partners. She faulted Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s government for what she called a reckless policy that undermines Britain’s defence posture, particularly around the Diego Garcia military base jointly used by the UK and the US.

Echoing Trump’s remarks that the deal signals “total weakness” to rivals like China and Russia, Badenoch said she shares his concerns and urged the government to reconsider. While the UK government insists the agreement protects long-term security interests, critics say it risks eroding sovereignty and emboldening global adversaries.
