Hunger Remark: Amaechi Is Hungry for Power, Not Food – Wike Fires Back

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has slammed former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, over his recent comment about being “hungry,” accusing him of craving power rather than experiencing real hunger.

Speaking during a media parley in Abuja on Monday, Wike described Amaechi’s remarks as an affront to Nigerians genuinely struggling with hunger and poverty.

“Amaechi cannot talk about hunger,” Wike said. “After more than 20 years in continuous high-profile government roles, how can he say he’s hungry? He is simply hungry for power.”

Wike and Amaechi, both influential political figures from oil-rich Rivers State, have long been rivals. Each has served as governor of the state—Amaechi from 2007 to 2015, and Wike from 2015 to 2023. Wike is now a key member of President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet.

At an event marking his 60th birthday last Friday, Amaechi had hinted at joining a coalition spearheaded by opposition leader Atiku Abubakar to challenge President Tinubu in 2027, declaring, “I’m hungry.”

Wike fired back, saying the comment was disingenuous.

“I don’t know why a man would use his 60th birthday to spread falsehood,” Wike said. “He was Rivers Assembly Speaker from 1999 to 2007, Governor from 2007 to 2015, and Minister of Transportation from 2015 to 2023. That’s 24 years straight in power, and now he says he’s hungry?”

He continued, “He never talked about hunger while borrowing money as a ‘super minister.’ Now, two years out of office, he says he's hungry? It’s power he’s hungry for, and it’s shameful.”

Wike criticized Amaechi’s alignment with Atiku and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, accusing the trio of belittling the real hardships faced by ordinary Nigerians.

“Joining a coalition just because you’re ‘hungry’ is not only dishonest—it’s an insult to those truly battling poverty. This is just about power and ego,” he said.
