FCT Public Primary School Children Out of School for Over 9 Weeks — Who Is Fighting for Their Future?

For more than nine weeks, public primary school pupils in the Federal Capital Territory have been unable to attend classes due to an ongoing strike by their teachers. At the heart of this crisis is a broken promise from the Tinubu-led administration regarding the minimum wage.

According to official records, the government claims to be paying FCT primary school teachers a minimum salary of ₦80,000 and above, depending on grade level. Unfortunately, this has proven to be far from the truth. These educators are still receiving ₦30,000, the outdated minimum wage — and worse, many have not been paid at all.

Understandably, the teachers have downed tools in protest. But it’s the children — the most vulnerable in our society — who are paying the highest price.

Mr. President, @officialasiwajubat, this is not the future you promised. A generation is being denied its right to basic education — the foundation upon which any bright future is built. Public education is not a luxury; it is a right, and it must not be held hostage by bureaucratic lies or governmental greed.

We also call on @officialefcc to launch a thorough investigation into the board responsible for handling teachers’ salaries. There must be accountability. Those responsible for this mess should be held to account so our children can return to school without further delay.

Nigerians are watching. History will remember where we all stood — and what we chose to ignore.
