World Bids Farewell to 2025: A Year of Tariffs, Truces, and Turmoil

As the world ushered in the new year, millions waved goodbye to a turbulent 2025 marked by political shocks, fragile ceasefires, and climate extremes. From Sydney to New York, celebrations were tinged with reflection after a year dominated by Donald Trump’s return to the White House, sweeping tariffs that rattled global markets, and unresolved conflicts across the globe.

New Year’s Eve revellers gathered under tight security in Sydney, where a minute of silence honoured victims of a recent mass shooting before fireworks lit up the harbour. Similar scenes unfolded worldwide, from packed crowds on Brazil’s Copacabana Beach to winter festivities in Scotland, as people hoped for calmer days ahead.

The year saw a fragile Gaza ceasefire brokered under US pressure, though accusations of violations persist. The Ukraine war dragged on with no breakthrough, as diplomacy stalled over territory disputes. Economies struggled under inflation fears and trade tensions, leaving many workers uncertain about the future.

2025 also delivered moments of pop culture and progress — the return of BTS, a global toy craze, major sporting events, and renewed ambition in space exploration with NASA’s Artemis II mission on the horizon. Yet growing scrutiny of artificial intelligence and fears of an economic slowdown shadow hopes for 2026.

As leaders exchanged New Year greetings and the world turned the page, optimism remained cautious. For many, the wish was simple: less turmoil, more stability, and a brighter year ahead.
