Court Rejects Nnamdi Kanu’s Brother’s Appearance, Says Only a Qualified Lawyer Can Represent Him
on Thursday refused to recognise Prince Emmanuel Kanu’s appearance for his brother, Nnamdi Kanu, ruling that only a certified lawyer can represent the IPOB leader in court.
Nnamdi Kanu, who was recently convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment, had filed a fresh motion explaining why he should not remain in Sokoto prison. His brother, Emmanuel Kanu, presented the motion on his behalf, arguing that the IPOB leader could not personally appear before the court or chambers to move the application.
In the motion, Kanu stated that it is in the interest of justice for him to be transferred to a detention facility closer to Abuja, which would allow him to properly pursue his appeal.
However, when the case was called, Justice Omotosho rejected Emmanuel Kanu’s attempt to stand in for his brother. The judge insisted that court procedures require a licensed lawyer with at least six years’ call to bar experience to move such applications.
The judge made it clear that despite being a family member, Emmanuel Kanu could not act as legal counsel.
