It took the French police ten minutes to get to the scene of Princess Diana's car crash, though it happened in metropolitan Paris. Please fact-check me.

But it took the Nigerian Police Force less than ten minutes to get to the scene of Anthony Joshua's car accident, though it occurred outside a metropolitan area. Again, please fact-check me.

It took French emergency response crews 101 minutes to get Princess Diana to the hospital, whereas Anthony Joshua was in a hospital within minutes. The total time was approximately thirty minutes.

Just as Anthony Joshua's friends sadly died on the spot, likewise did Dodi Fayed and the driver of the car, Henri Paul, die immediately from the impact of the accident.

The deaths, both in France and Nigeria, did not occur because of any negligence on the part of emergency first responders. They were a direct result of the collision from the accident.

Both crashes were caused by speeding far above the legal speed limit. Bad roads were not a factor at all in either crash.

The stretch of highway on which the Anthony Joshua crash occurred was very motorable and is a credit to Nigeria.

Go back and watch the video. This was a six-lane highway with three lanes on either side, well demarcated, free of potholes, and with lanes clearly delineated.

So, please tell me where Nigeria went wrong, or how we failed Mr Joshua in this sad episode that some unpatriotic citizens are trending things like 'Nigeria happened to Anthony Joshua'.

Did Honduras happen to Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes of TLC?
Did America happen to Fast and Furious star, Paul Walker, when he died in a car crash in California?

I understand that, because of the intense negative slant of Nigeria's social media sphere, where it is easier to trend with bad news, a critical mass of our people has a confirmation bias toward negative stories.

However, please take your time to Google how many times the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency has saved the lives of Nigerians in and around the Lagos-Ogun axis.

They even did this as recently as last week.

A Nigerian man was left speechless after spotting the unbelievable amount of food items a fresher ((first-year student) )brought along when school resumed.

The incident, captured in a now-viral TikTok video, showed the fresher arriving on campus with enough food to stock a mini grocery store.

In the trending clip shared by TikTok user @absurants, the man could be seen filming as the new student unloaded his supplies.

The items included tubers of yam, a bucket of onions, a bag of rice, a gallon of groundnut oil, and several other foodstuffs neatly packed into his hostel room.

According to the poster, the sight was so overwhelming that he couldn’t resist recording the moment.

He jokingly noted that the fresher “really meant business” and was clearly not ready to go hungry while on campus.

From the clip, it was obvious that the young man came well-prepared to face the realities of campus life, possibly avoiding the high cost of food and canteen meals that most students complain about.

Nigerian Senate passes bill imposing life imprisonment for child defilement no option if fine.

In a landmark move to curb rising cases of sexual violence, lawmakers push for harsher penalties — as a Lagos court simultaneously hands life sentence to a man for raping a 7-year-old girl.

The Nigerian Senate is currently trending after passing a tougher bill prescribing life imprisonment for anyone convicted of defiling a minor, with no option of fine, in a bid to combat the alarming rise in child sexual abuse across the country.

The new amendment, which replaces the existing provisions of the Criminal Code Act and the Penal Code, was strongly championed by Senator Muhammad Adamu Aliero (Kebbi Central), who insisted that offenders deserve nothing less than life imprisonment — and even hinted that capital punishment would have been more fitting.

Initially, the bill proposed a 20-year jail term for paedophiles. However, Senator Aliero called for a stiffer sentence, arguing that lenient laws have failed to deter offenders.

Under the new proposal Defilement of a minor now carries life imprisonment — without an option of fine. Rape now carries a minimum of 10 years to life imprisonment. The law updates the Criminal Code Act (Section 218), which previously prescribed 13 years to life imprisonment, and Section 221, which allowed 2 years for unlawful carnal knowledge of minors. The Penal Code (Section 283), applicable in Northern Nigeria, which carried 14 years to life imprisonment or fine, will also be updated.

In Sharia-compliant states, penalties remain even more severe — extending to death or life imprisonment, depending on interpretation and local enforcement.

Coincidentally, on the same day as the Senate’s deliberation, a Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) Court in Oshodi, Lagos, sentenced a 25-year-old graphic designer to life imprisonment for raping a 7-year-old girl in 2020.

According to court records, the convict — a neighbour of the victim’s family in a “face-me-I-face-you” compound — repeatedly assaulted the minor when her parents were away, forcing himself on her in the kitchen and bathroom.
The judgement has been widely commended, though some Nigerians believe that life imprisonment is still not harsh enough, with growing calls for chemical castration or death penalty for child rapists.
Others are also urging lawmakers to criminalise false rape accusations, warning that misuse of the law could undermine justice for real victims.

This moves by the Nigerian Senate marks one of the strongest legislative actions yet in the fight against sexual violence and child exploitation.
If fully enacted and enforced, it could reshape how rape and child defilement cases are prosecuted nationwide — potentially closing loopholes that have long allowed offenders to escape justice.
