Ohanaeze Ndigbo Declares Annual Thanksgiving Day To Commemorate Igbo Survival Of Nigeria-Biafra Civil War

The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, has officially designated the last Sunday of every January as an annual thanksgiving day to commemorate the survival of the Igbo people during the Nigeria-Biafra Civil War of 1967–1970. The resolution was unanimously adopted during the group’s Imeobi meeting held at the International Conference Centre (ICC) in Enugu.

Announcing the decision, Ohanaeze’s Deputy President General, Prince Okechukwu Nwadinobi, explained that the thanksgiving day is meant to acknowledge what the organisation describes as divine intervention that spared the Igbo from total annihilation during the war. He stated that all Igbo people are encouraged to attend church services on the chosen day to express gratitude to God for preservation and survival amid the horrors of the conflict.

Nwadinobi noted that the leadership of Ohanaeze, under Senator Azuta Mbata, considered it necessary to institutionalise the annual thanksgiving, stressing that without God, the support of a few Nigerians, and intervention from the international community, the Biafran cause and the Igbo people might not have survived. He recalled that the war was marked by deliberate attempts to wipe out Biafra, making survival itself a profound historical milestone worthy of remembrance.

Beyond the thanksgiving initiative, Nwadinobi outlined several interventions undertaken by the current Ohanaeze leadership to safeguard Igbo interests nationwide. These include a high-level delegation to Lagos over the demolition of Igbo-owned businesses in Festac Town and the Trade Fair Complex, engagement with affected traders after the Mandilas Plaza fire incident, and the formation of professional teams to guide Igbo entrepreneurs on best business practices.

He also disclosed a new partnership between Ohanaeze and Otu Oka Iwu, a body of legal experts, aimed at providing free legal services to Ndigbo on issues affecting their welfare and rights.

In a goodwill message, former Archbishop of the Enugu Anglican Communion, Dr. Emmanuel Olisa Chukwu, welcomed the resolution, describing it as spiritually significant. Recounting his near-death experience during the war, including the Asaba genocide, the cleric said the decision resonated deeply with the Igbo people, whom he described as deeply religious and sustained by faith through decades of hardship.

A footage of the tragic incident showed, sighted on the Mail showed Ashraf Abu Hakam was, in one moment celebrating the joyous occasion in Aswan Governorate, and in the next moment, collapsing.

Reports say the newly weeds were holding hands and dancing amidst guests when the tragic incident happened.

Hakam suddenly lost grips and collapsed on to the ground, leading to a stampede.

He was later confirmed dead by cardiac arrest at the hospital, turning a hitherto joyous atmosphere to a mournful one.

The heartbreaking incident quickly spread across Egyptian social media, with hundreds of people expressing shock and offering condolences, Gulf News reports.

It would be recalled that some days ago, a similar incident happened in the country this time not a groom but the bride.

Identified as Adna Rovčanin-Omerbegović, the 26-year-old nurse died after falling into a coma at her wedding.

A Sunday worship service descended into horror when a gunman opened fire at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc, Michigan, United States, leaving multiple people dead and the building engulfed in flames.

Police confirmed multiple victims and said the suspected gunman was “down,” though it was unclear whether he had been killed or taken into custody.

According to the BBC, the church building was reported to be “actively on fire,” and authorities urged residents to avoid the area.

“There are multiple victims and the shooter is down. There is no threat to the public at this time,” the Grand Blanc Township Police Department announced on Facebook. They added that emergency crews are still working at the scene.

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer called the attack “unacceptable.”

“My heart is breaking for the Grand Blanc community. Violence anywhere, especially in a place of worship, is unacceptable. I am grateful to the first responders who took action quickly,” he added.

Attorney-General Pam Bondi said federal agencies, including the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), had been dispatched to assist in the investigation.

“Such violence at a place of worship is heartbreaking and chilling. Please join me in praying for the victims of this terrible tragedy,” she posted on social media.

According to residents, the men were asleep when assailants stormed their room, dragged them outside, and attacked them with machetes.

A resident, who identified himself simply as Alfred but declined further details, said, “The boys were known as Laboure's in the area.

On Sunday morning, one of their colleagues raised an alarm, and when people rushed to the scene, the three of them were found in a pool of blood with machete cuts all over their bodies.”

Another resident, a member of the Lekki Estate Residents Association, confirmed that the incident created panic in the community. He added that security measures are now being reinforced.

Although the motive behind the killings remains unclear, community sources suspect it could be linked to cult-related clashes or a dispute involving the victims.

92-Year-Old Jailed for 20 Years Over 1967 R+pe and M¥rder in UK’s Oldest Cold Case Conviction.

A 92-year-old man, Ryland Headley, has been sentenced to life in prison with a minimum of 20 years for the r+pe and m¥der of 26-year-old Louisa Dunne in Bristol—58 years after the crime.

Headley, who is now the oldest person in UK history to be convicted of m¥rder, was told by Justice Sweeting: “You will d+e in prison.” The judge described Headley as a “cr¥el, depr+ved, pitiless man” who bru¥tally att+cked Dunne, a mother of two and widow living alone in Easton, Bristol, in 1967.

The case was unsolved for decades until cold case detectives in 2023 reexamined evidence and discovered Headley’s DNA on Dunne’s clothing, leading to his arrest. Following the m¥rder, Headley left Bristol, eventually settling in Ipswich, where in 1977 he r+ped two elderly women, aged 79 and 84.

He was initially sentenced to life, but on appeal, psychiatrists claimed the a§§aults stemmed from s+x¥al frustration due to a troubled marriage. His sentence was reduced, and he served just two years.

Despite his age, the court ruled that the gravity of the 1967 crime—and the s¥fferings inflicted—warranted the full penalty. Justice Sweeting emphasized that Dunne had lived a quiet life surrounded by her books and belongings and that her d+ath had caused deep, lasting p+in for her family.

Prosecutor Anna Vigars KC noted that in the 1960s, such a crime could have carried a d+ath sentence. Though societal norms have changed, she urged the court to consider the horror Dunne must have experienced.

Headley showed no remorse, believing for decades he had escaped justice. But forensic breakthroughs and persistent police work ensured he finally faced the consequences.
