A British court has sentenced a transgender woman, Ciara Watkin, to 21 months in prison for deceiving a man into sexual activity by falsely presenting herself as a biological female.

According to the reports, the victim told Durham Crown Court he would never have consented to the encounter had he known Watkin was biologically male.

Watkin, 21, from Thornaby, Stockton-on-Tees, was convicted of sexual assault after a jury dismissed her claim that the man “would have realised” her true gender identity.

Recorder Peter Makepeace KC said he was “certain” the victim believed Watkin was a woman “from start to finish,” describing her actions as deliberate “lies and deception.”

The court heard that Watkin, who had identified as female since childhood but had not undergone medical transition or surgery, met the victim on Snapchat when both were 18.

She reportedly used a female cartoon avatar as her profile picture and later claimed to be menstruating to stop the man from touching her below the waist.

When Watkin later revealed she was biologically male, the victim said he felt “physically sick” and reported the incident to the police. He told the court he was “shocked, embarrassed, and humiliated,” adding that he faced ridicule online and felt part of his masculinity was “taken away.”

Defence lawyer Victoria Lamballe argued that Watkin’s actions were not malicious but rooted in “shame and deep discomfort” with her body. Watkin, diagnosed with gender dysphoria, had reportedly faced years of bullying and used deception as a way to cope.

“It is hardly surprising that Watkin built a façade to mask her turmoil,” Lamballe said. “She simply wanted to be loved.”

However, the judge ruled that Watkin’s deception was intentional and self-serving, adding that she showed “no remorse” and appeared “flippant and disinterested” throughout the trial.

Watkin will serve her sentence in a male prison, where officials have promised protective measures for her safety. She will remain on the sex offenders register for 10 years and is subject to a lifetime restraining order prohibiting contact with the victim.

The two, having first and only once met under the circumstances of a one-night stand in 2015 at one of the Hilton Hotel, Paddington clubs, were involved in what a UK judge has now called a “horrific and malicious” smear campaign that was all based on fabrication.

Chia, who did not attend court or go through a lawyer, was convicted of harassment and libel, devoting years to spreading slander online, referring to Ogunkanmi as a “rapist,” claiming he had spiked her and fallen in love with her, impregnated her, molested her child, and even bribed police officers and hospital staff to cover up the alleged offense.

The court, however, ruled none of her claims true.

Mr. Ogunkanmi, a three-time father (aged 44) and Nigerian-born energy trader residing in Dubai and regularly commuting for work, said that he had first met Ms. Chia in 2015 on a night out at Steam Bar, Hilton Hotel, London, with his friend Prisca Okoye. They parted after a night in his hotel room and went their separate ways the following day.

But what was supposed to be one evening of adult playtime became a nightmare.
By January 2016, Ms. Chia started demanding money, asserting that Ogunkanmi had slept with her friend and would ruin his life if he did not pay her some. She called his office over 100 times in a day at one point, and he had to threaten her with the Metropolitan Police.

A British High Court has ordered a woman, Cynthia Chia, to pay £25,000 in d@mages to Nigerian energy trader, Idowu Ogunkanmi, after subjecting him to nearly a decade of h@rassment, including a false r@pe accusation and a series of def@matory social media posts.

Ogunkanmi, 44, who resides in Dubai, met Chia in 2015 at a nightclub in London. After a one-night stand, he returned to Dubai, but their brief encounter spiraled into years of t%rment. Chia launched a “sustained, relentless and vind+ctive” campaign against him, accusing him falsely of r@pe, br+bery, and child ab¥se.

According to court documents, Chia repeatedly h@rassed Ogunkanmi via messages and calls—sometimes up to 100 times a day and falsely claimed he had slept with her friend. She also attempted to ext%rt money, receiving £250 under the pretense of needing help with her phone bill. The situation worsened in 2016 when Chia accused him of r@pe.

Ogunkanmi voluntarily returned to the UK for questioning, and police later dropped the case due to lack of evidence. However, from 2018 to 2022, Chia continued to post def@matory statements online, using Instagram accounts such as cindylicious11 and r@pist_trying_to_avoid_justice.

She publicly shared his name, photo, and f@lse allegations that he had dr¥gged, r@ped, and impregnated her, and br+bed authorities to destr%y evidence. Chia ignored repeated legal notices and did not attend court. Deputy High Court Judge Susie Alegre granted a default judgment in Ogunkanmi’s favor, ruling that the allegations were m@licious and had caused serious harm.

The judge awarded £25,000 in d@mages for both libel and h@rassment and issued an injunction to stop further ab¥se. Chia was also convicted earlier this year of a+sa¥lting another woman linked to the case and sentenced to 10 weeks in prison with a five-year restraining order. Ogunkanmi expressed relief at the ruling but criticized social media platforms for failing to curb the spread of h@rmful falsehoods.
