  • “Is Night Duty a Death Sentence for Female Workers in Nigeria? How Safe Are Women Like Nurse Chinemerem?”

The tragic killing of Nurse Chinemerem Pascalina Chuwumeziem on January 3, 2026, after returning home from night duty at the Federal Medical Centre in Abuja has exposed a stark reality for female workers in Nigeria: the night shift can be deadly. In a country where insecurity is rampant, especially in major cities, women working late hours are disproportionately targeted by criminals, including notorious “one-chance” taxis.
Despite widespread awareness of these risks, many employers continue to schedule female staff for night shifts without providing safe transportation or alternatives, a failure that amounts to negligence. Under Nigerian labour laws, organizations have a duty of care to protect employees, but for female workers on night duty, these protections often stop at the workplace gate. The predictable dangers faced by women like Nurse Chinemerem demand accountability, not mere condolences.
The article highlights that employers have practical solutions: dedicated night buses, transport allowances for safe services, or support for personal vehicle acquisition. Unions, too, must do more than issue statements—they must demand safety as a non-negotiable condition for night work. Failure to do so signals that women’s lives are valued less than their labour.
This tragedy raises critical questions for Nigerians: Should female workers be forced into dangerous night shifts without protection? Are unions and employers doing enough to prevent such deaths? How can Nigeria reform workplace safety to ensure women are not exposed to predictable dangers?
Fintter readers, we want your voice: How should the government, employers, and unions act to protect women like Nurse Chinemerem? Share your thoughts and experiences in the comments to join this urgent conversation.

  • From Idle Plots to Survival Farms: How Ogun Community Turns Vacant Lands Into Food Security Solutions

Amid Nigeria’s ongoing economic hardships, residents of Iwoye-Aiyedokun in Ogun State have transformed idle lands into small-scale survival farms, producing maize, cassava, plantain, vegetables, and fruits to sustain their families. Families like Rukayat Ogunjimi and Ademola Adedokun grow crops in unused plots near their homes, minimizing food costs and transportation while improving access to fresh produce. The initiative is inspired by backyard gardening campaigns promoted by prominent Nigerians, including Nonye Soludo and First Lady Remi Tinubu, emphasizing subsistence farming as a solution to rising food prices. Local regulations now protect crops from free-ranging livestock, helping maintain farm productivity. The project demonstrates how communities creatively address food security and reduce dependency on commercial markets.

  • Transport Fares Spike By Up To 50% Across Enugu As Christmas, New Year Rush Catches Commuters Off Guard

Transport fares across major routes in Enugu State have surged by as much as 45 to 50 percent less than 12 hours to Christmas Day, leaving many commuters shocked and frustrated as they struggle to travel for end-of-year festivities. SaharaReporters checks conducted on Wednesday revealed that commercial transport operators abruptly increased prices across both inter-city and intra-city routes, citing festive traffic imbalance and rising operational losses.
On the popular Old Park–Eke Obinagu route, fares that previously ranged between ₦400 and ₦500 now cost between ₦700 and ₦800. Similarly, commuters traveling from Old Park to Abakpa, who usually paid ₦400 to ₦500 depending on the time of day, were forced to part with as much as ₦800. Passengers using the Holy Ghost–Agbani Road axis also experienced sharp increases, with fares jumping from ₦500 to ₦900.
Intra-city transportation has not been spared either. Short-distance trips that once cost ₦150 now attract ₦300, while routes previously priced at ₦200 have doubled to ₦400. The sudden hike has disrupted travel plans for many residents, particularly low-income earners trying to reunite with family members during the festive season.
Commercial drivers defended the increase, explaining that the Christmas travel pattern has created a one-way passenger movement, leaving them stranded without return passengers. According to several drivers at Old Park, vehicles often return empty after dropping passengers in residential or rural areas, forcing operators to factor return costs into outgoing fares to avoid running at a loss.
“This festive period is different,” one driver explained. “People are traveling mostly in one direction to their villages. If we don’t adjust fares, we won’t be able to cover fuel and maintenance costs.”
However, commuters have strongly criticised the development, describing it as exploitative and poorly timed. Some passengers argued that with fuel prices lower than in previous months, transport fares should not be increasing. Others accused drivers of taking advantage of the Christmas rush to make excessive profits.
Calls have grown louder for government agencies and transport unions, including the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), to intervene and regulate fares during festive periods. As of the time of reporting, efforts to get responses from union leaders were unsuccessful.
With Christmas and New Year celebrations fast approaching, residents say they are left with little choice but to bear the burden of higher transport costs, adding further strain to an already difficult economic season.

  • Owena–Idanre Road in Ondo State Left Abandoned Despite ₦371 Million Government Payment, Raising Fresh Concerns Over Corruption and Project Accountability

A field report by Tracka and the BudgIT Foundation has revealed that the Owena–Alade–Idanre Road in Ondo State remains abandoned and nearly impassable despite over ₦371 million released for its construction and rehabilitation in 2024. Physical inspections found no evidence of active work or contractor presence, contradicting official payment records. The poor condition of the road has worsened transportation challenges, hurt local economic activities, and heightened security risks for residents. Civil society groups are now demanding transparency from the Federal Ministry of Works and calling on anti-graft agencies to investigate the contractor and possible diversion or mismanagement of public funds.

  • Senior officials have indicated that the refinery introduced this price cut to assist in reducing transportation expenses ahead of the Christmas period, when millions of Nigerians travel across states to reunite with family.

The company explained that this pricing adjustment demonstrates their, “commitment to make the season memorable for citizens and reduce cost pressures on road transport operators.”

According to industry insiders, the refinery's successive price changes—culminating in today's significant cut—signal the definitive collapse of the former marketers' consortium model, which once managed coordinated bulk purchasing. As the refinery expands its nationwide distribution channels, individual marketers can now deal directly, allowing for quicker pricing responses and greater market reach.

The refinery has framed this latest cut as both an economic measure and a social initiative. With interstate travel expected to rise sharply before Christmas and New Year celebrations, the reduced gantry price should lead to lower retail fuel prices in various states, particularly in the North and South-East regions, where logistics expenses often surge during holidays.

Officials noted that further adjustments remain possible as the refinery increases output in preparation for its upcoming expansion phase.

  • Dirty reception for Nawrocki

The visit of President Karol Nawrocki to Latvia was overshadowed by an unexpected situation. Photos of the car that picked up the Polish delegation in Riga appeared on social media. The car was blatantly dirty.

In response to the criticism, Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Maciej Wewiór explained that the transportation of the delegation is the responsibility of the host country, not the Polish embassy.

He also noted that the photos were taken on Wednesday evening, when it was raining in Riga and there was no car wash at the airport. Furthermore, he added that the Polish embassy only had an influence on the organization of the visit, not the condition of the car.

  • NEW: Enugu Govt to Restrict Tricycles, Yellow Buses From Major Highways as BRT Rollout Begins Soon

The Enugu State Government has announced plans to restrict the operation of tricycles (Keke), yellow buses, and minibuses from five major highways across Enugu city, paving the way for the smooth implementation of the state’s Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system.

This was made known by the Commissioner for Transport, Dr. Obi Ozor, during a consultative meeting with transport unions and stakeholders at the ministry’s headquarters in Enugu on Monday.

Dr. Ozor listed the affected traffic corridors as Okpara Avenue–Abakaliki Road–New Haven Junction–Naira Triangle–Emene Airport; Ogui Road–Chime Avenue–Naira Triangle; and New Haven Junction–Bisala Road–Rangers Avenue–WAEC–Nkpokiti–Zik’s Avenue.

Others are Ogui Road–Presidential Road–WAEC–Nkpokiti and the entire Agbani Road stretch.

According to the commissioner, these will become dedicated BRT routes in line with Governor Peter Mbah’s vision to reposition Enugu as a modern, multimodal and globally competitive city. He however stresed that taxis will be also allowed to ply the BRT routes.

He noted that tricycles were never designed for high-speed highways, stressing that their presence on such routes disrupts traffic flow and puts lives at risk.

“We must be open to change. This reform is not about taking anyone’s job. It is about reorganizing the system so that BRT buses operate on the primary roads, yellow buses serve the secondary routes, and tricycles provide last-mile connectivity. Everyone has a place in the value chain,” he stated.

Dr. Ozor observed that the government has procured 200 CNG-powered BRT buses, alongside 4,000 electric taxis to be assembled locally at ANAMMCO in Enugu, with the first 1,000 taxis ready within three months.

He said the Mbah administration has also built 84 new bus shelters across the city, forming the backbone of a modern transit network designed around safety, comfort, and affordability.

He stated that Enugu, with an estimated two million daily commuters, requires at least 8,000 buses to meet mobility demands. The new BRT buses, he added, are equipped with padded seats, functional air-conditioning, WiFi, and strict safety features.

“Passengers do not stand in these buses, and every vehicle is tracked and monitored from our central command and control centre. The BRT fare now comes with a 47 percent discount to cushion transportation costs for citizens,” he said.

Dr. Ozor also announced some key resolutions reached at the meeting. He said that transport unions interested in participating in BRT bus or terminal operations are to submit proposals, including financial models, for government evaluation.

He further explained that the Ije Card, the state’s electronic fare payment system designed to make commuting faster, cashless, and more convenient, will be decentralized so that sales points reach five million residents within 90 days.

He added that the government regrets delays in allocating loading bays at the new transport terminals, noting that proposals are under review and would be finalized soon.

He encouraged the transport unions to access financial facilities to procure their own buses or to participate in the BRT operations space.

“There are enormous investment opportunities as Enugu expands its connectivity to other cities,” he said.

Stakeholders across the transport unions expressed their support for the state’s transport transformation agenda, saying they recognized the long-term benefits for commuters, operators, and the economy of the state.

The Enugu State Chairman of the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), Comrade Chidiebere Aniagu, stated that the union was not opposed to the reforms and shares the government’s vision for a safer and more efficient transportation ecosystem. He appealed to the government to address the concerns of their members.

  • Photos from the ongoing rehabilitation of the Bauchi–Gombe Road under the Renewed Hope administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu marks a significant step toward transforming one of the most neglected federal roads in the North-East.

For years, the Bauchi–Gombe corridor was widely regarded as one of the worst roads to travel on, causing hardship for motorists, traders, and communities that rely on it for daily movement and economic activities. Today, that narrative is changing, as extensive rehabilitation work is visibly underway.

This progress is a testament to the dedication of Engr. David Umahi, the Honourable Minister of Works, whose leadership reflects the Federal Government’s strong commitment to delivering quality infrastructure, enhancing regional connectivity, and driving national development.

With this project, the administration is not only easing transportation challenges but also boosting commerce, safety, and socioeconomic growth across the region.

  • Lagos to Partially Close Lekki–Ajah Corridor for Eight Months of Road Repairs.

The Lagos State Government has announced plans to partially close sections of the Lekki–Ajah corridor for eight months to facilitate major rehabilitation and improvement works aimed at easing traffic congestion.

Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, revealed this in a statement on Wednesday, stating that the project will run from Saturday, November 15, 2025, to Wednesday, July 15, 2026.

Osiyemi explained that the rehabilitation, which has already begun with preliminary works, will be executed in two phases to minimize disruption.

According to him, the first phase will cover seven sections, during which one lane will be closed while the other remains open to motorists. Once repairs on the first lane are completed, construction will shift to the opposite side.

“Motorists heading toward Lekki and Ajah will continue to have access throughout the construction,” he assured.

For the second phase, vehicles moving from Ajah toward Lekki will be diverted to one lane while work continues on the other. “When the first lane is completed, work will shift to the second. At all times, movement toward Ajah will remain open,” Osiyemi added.

The commissioner noted that some sections of the corridor will experience partial closures during the entire project period.

He appealed to motorists and residents to remain patient and cooperate with traffic officials. “We urge road users to obey traffic officers and follow diversion signs as directed. These repairs are part of the Lagos State Government’s commitment to improving road infrastructure and ensuring safer, smoother journeys for everyone,” he said.

  • Senate moves to phase out petrol cars, advances electric vehicle bill.

The Nigerian Senate has moved closer to adopting clean energy transportation after a bill seeking to phase out petrol-powered cars and promote electric vehicles (EVs) scaled second reading on Tuesday.

The proposed legislation, sponsored by Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, aims to provide the legal and policy framework for Nigeria’s transition from fossil fuel dependence to electric mobility. Kalu explained that the bill would help reduce carbon emissions, encourage local vehicle production, and align the country with global efforts toward sustainable transport.

According to him, the transport sector contributes between 20 and 30 percent of Nigeria’s greenhouse gas emissions. “This bill seeks to establish a comprehensive legal and institutional framework to guide Nigeria’s gradual move from petrol-powered vehicles to cleaner, energy-efficient, and environmentally friendly alternatives,” he said.

The bill also proposes creating a National Electric Vehicle Development and Promotion Council to coordinate policy implementation at all levels of government.

In support of the proposal, Senator Adamu Aliero (Kebbi Central) described it as timely, noting that countries like Kenya and South Africa are already progressing in electric mobility. He said adopting EVs would reduce emissions in cities such as Lagos and Kano, improve public health, and create new jobs.

Senator Osita Ngwu (Enugu West) added that Nigeria’s population gives it a critical role in global climate action, while Senator Titus Zam (Benue North-West) highlighted the environmental and health gains of the transition.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio commended the initiative, calling it a “very good innovation,” and expressed confidence in its potential impact. The bill has been forwarded to the Senate Committee on Industries for further consideration, with a report expected in four weeks.

  • Voters Snub Trump as Zohran Mamdani Becomes NYC’s First Muslim Mayor.

Zohran Mamdani has been elected as the new mayor of New York City, marking a historic moment for America’s largest metropolis. At just 34, he becomes the city’s youngest mayor since 1892 and its first Muslim and first African-born leader.

Mamdani’s victory is extraordinary on several levels. Entering the race with little name recognition, limited funding, and no major party backing, he managed to defeat two political heavyweights former Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa.

But beyond the upset, voters sent a loud political message. President Trump had earlier warned that he would stop federal funding for New York if residents elected another Democratic mayor. New Yorkers didn’t budge.

They overwhelmingly backed Mamdani, signaling they would not be intimidated or influenced by threats from Washington.

Mamdani represents a new wave of progressive Democrats pushing for bold reforms. Known for his charisma, digital fluency, and unapologetically left-wing agenda, he has championed policies like free childcare, expanded public transportation, and tougher oversight of private enterprise.

  • Diddy reportedly attacked in prison after inmate held a knife to his throat.

One of Sean “Diddy” Combs’ close friends has spoken out about a frightening incident inside MDC Brooklyn, where the music mogul is currently serving time.

According to Charlucci Finney, Diddy woke up one night to find a knife pressed against his throat — a moment that could easily have ended in tragedy. Finney told Daily Mail that he isn’t sure whether guards intervened or if Diddy managed to fend off the attacker himself, but confirmed it was a very close call.

Sources familiar with the situation also verified the account to TMZ, describing it as a targeted intimidation attempt against Diddy. Finney said he believes the motive was to scare him, adding that prison is especially dangerous for inmates with sex-related convictions.

During Diddy’s sentencing, his lawyer Brian Steel mentioned the same incident, stating that a guard stopped the inmate before any serious harm was done.

Diddy is currently serving a 50-month federal prison sentence after being convicted on two counts of violating the Mann Act, which involves the transportation of individuals across state lines for unlawful purposes. He was, however, acquitted of sex trafficking and racketeering charges.

Meanwhile, reports claim that former U.S. President Donald Trump is considering pardoning Diddy — though the White House Communications Office has denied those claims, TMZ insists their sources stand by the story.

Prison consultant Sam Mangel, who spoke on TMZ Live, said Diddy’s next prison is expected to be less violent than MDC Brooklyn. Still, he warned that incidents like this show why the rapper must remain alert.

For now, Diddy’s safety remains a concern among his inner circle, with Finney describing the experience as “terrifying” and a stark reminder of how quickly things can turn inside prison walls.
