According to the interpretation of the 21-Day Rule in the Nigerian Constitution, President Bola Tinubu is expected to formally hand over to Vice President Kashim Shettima if he remains outside the country for 21 consecutive days.

Tinubu travelled abroad on December 28, 2025. By January 17, 2026, his absence would amount to 21 days.

However, on day 20 of his stay overseas, the President reportedly assigned Vice President Shettima to travel to Guinea. Observers argue that this move effectively creates a timing gap, allowing Tinubu additional room without triggering a formal handover.

The development has since sparked debate among political watchers and constitutional analysts.

According to the 21-Day Rule in the Nigerian Constitution, Tinubu was mandated to hand over to Shettima within 21 days of travelling abroad.

Since he travelled on the 28th of December, 2025, today, January 17th, 2026, would make it 21 days that he'd be away from the country.

Yesterday, day 20 of his stay abroad, Tinubu sent Shettima to Guinea, out of the country. This buys him enough time against handing over to Shettima.

In a statement on Thursday, the Vice President condemned the attack, assuring that the Federal Government is deploying additional tactical teams to the area to track down and apprehend those responsible for the terror attack.

"The Federal Government will not tolerate any attempt to undermine the peace and security of our nation. Our security agencies are working round the clock to ensure that the perpetrators of this heinous crime are brought to justice immediately," he said.

Senator Shettima expressed confidence that the security architecture currently in place would not only apprehend the perpetrators but also unravel the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

Borno state independent electoral commission has commenced the distribution of sensitive and non sensitive materials to the twenty seven local government areas of the state ahead of December 13th local government election.

Chairman of the commission, Dr. Tahiru Shettima says the Commission is fully prepared for the chairmanship and councillorship election with measures in place to ensure no eligible voter is left out even in hard to reach areas, urging political parties to abide by the electoral guidelines and calling on voters to turn out in large numbers to exercise their civic duty.

Troops of Operation Hadin Kai have neutralised two terrorists in an ambush at Shettimari general area of Konduga Local Government Area of Borno State.

Sources told Zagazola Makama that the operation, carried out under Operation Desert Sanity V, was executed by an ambush team in the early hours of Thursday.

The source said the troops, intercepted the fighters around their crossing point at about 1:20 a.m.

He said the soldiers immediately engaged the terrorists, neutralising two of them while others fled in different directions.

According to sources, the troops later conducted an immediate exploitation of the area and recovered two RPG bombs and one magazine loaded with 23 rounds of 7.62mm x 39mm special ammunition.

“There was no casualty on the side of the troops. The ambush team later repositioned and continued with their task.

NAHCON Commissioner Defies VP Shettima’s Order, Retains Retired Staff Amid Nepotism Allegations


The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) is facing fresh controversy as insiders accuse Commissioner of Operations, Anofi Elegushi, of ignoring Vice-President Kashim Shettima’s directive by retaining a retired officer, Mr. Gaffar, who left the commission in 2023. The retired officer reportedly attends official meetings, travels with the commissioner, and maintains offices in Abuja and Saudi Arabia — actions seen as violations of Public Service Rules. Elegushi is also accused of keeping a former NYSC corps member allegedly related to him, granting her full staff privileges despite her service ending months ago.
