• Strike: ASUU to hold strategic NEC meeting as action enters week two.

The national leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities, ASUU, will meet today, Tuesday, to evaluate its position on the ongoing strike by its members.

The development comes after ASUU disclosed that the Government’s Renegotiation Team, led by Alhaji Yayale Ahmed, came to the negotiation table with a documented response to the union’s demands and made some offers to it.

In a strike bulletin issued on Monday, the union acknowledged that progress was being recorded in certain areas such as the release of third-party deductions, arrears of promotions, mainstreaming of Earned Academic Allowance, EAA, confiscation of University of Abuja land, and victimization of its members in KSU, LASU and FUTO.

ASUU members on Monday held congresses across its branches in the various universities to vote on whether the union should suspend or continue its labour action.

Recall that the union had given a 14-day ultimatum to the federal government for the conclusion and implementation of the renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU agreement, as well as addressing other demands of its members.

However, there’s indication that ASUU wasn’t ready to throw in the towel yet as feelers are that many of the branches have voted in support of the continuation of the strike.

Officials of ASUU at the University of Abuja, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. They confided in DAILY POST that the matter is far from being over.

According to them, their members in respective branches were in support of the continuation of the strike despite some offers being made to ASUU by the Nigerian government.

  • Addressing forgery, perjury in public office .

Nigeria for long has allowed high profile individuals to get away with crimes while less fortunate Nigerians rightfully pay the price for their sins.

One major area prominent Nigerians, especially political and judicial officers, get away with is forgery and perjury, both criminal offences.

A few weeks ago, following several denials and feeble pushbacks, Nigeria’s Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Uche Nnaji, was forced to resign from the government of President Bola Tinubu after being exposed in the web of certificate forgery by online newspaper, Premium Times.

Nnaji was found to have forged his BSc and National Youth Service Corps certificates, which he submitted to the president and the Senate during his ministerial screening in 2023. Perjury!

The former minister had claimed to have obtained a degree from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Enugu State, in 1985, and completed his National Youth Service in Jos in 1986.

Despite that both UNN and the NYSC, through official correspondences, disowned Nnaji’s certificates, the minister was in denial.

Amid the heated debates, the ex-minister was forced to resign from President Tinubu’s cabinet.

Nnaji’s fiasco was not the first, and does not seem to be the last. It is estimated that from 1999 to now, no fewer than 10 prominent political figures have seen their careers cut short by deeply troubling certificate forgery scandals

President Bola Tinubu yesterday accepted the resignation of Geoffrey Uche Nnaji as Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, drawing a line under a steadily escalating scandal and sparing his administration the weight of mounting political baggage ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Nnaji, who was appointed in August 2023, stepped down following allegations of certificate forgery.

    The resignation takes effect immediately.

In his resignation letter, he thanked the President for the opportunity to serve and stated that he had been the target of blackmail by his political opponents.

The President, in a statement by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, expressed appreciation for Nnaji’s service to the nation and wished him success in his future endeavours.

Operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) had earlier visited the main campus of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, in connection with allegations that the Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation, Nnaji, had forged his degree certificate.

The Guardian learnt that DSS officials questioned key university personnel, including Vice Chancellor Prof Simon Ortuanya, the Registrar, and officials of the institution’s Examinations and Records Department.

  • Minister Nnaji’s Alleged Certificate Forgery…We’ll Act After Court Verdict, Says Presidency.

As pressure continues to mount on the minister of science, technology, and innovation, Uche Nnaji, to resign over an alleged certificate forgery, the Presidency has said it will act after the court verdict.

According to the Presidency, a comment on the matter won’t be necessary since the matter is already before the court.

Reacting to LEADERSHIP’s inquiry on Monday, the special adviser to the president on information and strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said the federal government would respect the judicial process and await the court’s verdict before taking any position.

“This matter is already in court. We should await the verdict of the court,” Onanuga told LEADERSHIP.

The clarification comes following revelations that the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) disowned the certificate allegedly submitted by Nnaji.

In a letter dated October 2, 2025, and signed by the vice-chancellor of the university, Prof. Simon Ortuanya, the institution said records showed that Nnaji, with matriculation number 1981/30725, was admitted to study Microbiology/Biochemistry in 1981 but did not complete his studies.

Part of the letter reads: “From every available record and information from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, we are unable to confirm that Mr Geoffrey Uchechukwu Nnaji, the current minister of science and technology, graduated from the University of Nigeria in July 1985, as there are no records of his completion of study.

“Following the above, the University of Nigeria, Nsukka DID NOT and, consequently, COULD NOT have issued the purported certificate in July 1985 to Mr Geoffrey Uchechukwu Nnaji.”

The university said its position was consistent with an earlier letter sent to the Public Complaints Commission on May 13, 2025, in response to a similar inquiry.

  • Certificate Scandal: Enugu Govt Distances Itself as Minister Uche Nnaji Faces Tough Questions Over Alleged Forgery
The Enugu State Government has strongly denied any involvement in the escalating certificate forgery scandal surrounding the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Uche Geoffrey Nnaji, calling on him to take responsibility and address the allegations personally.

The controversy deepened after Nnaji’s media aide, Robert Ngwu, accused Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah of masterminding a smear campaign against his principal. Ngwu, at a press conference in Abuja, dismissed reports that Nnaji forged his University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) and NYSC certificates, describing them as “politically motivated lies.”

“All these sponsored attacks are being coordinated by Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State. The governor has given a new name to all his problems — Chief Uche Geoffrey Nnaji,” Ngwu alleged.

However, Governor Mbah swiftly rebutted the claims through his aides, urging the minister to face his own issues.

“Carry your cross,” Mbah said, stressing that his administration had no hand in the matter.

    University Disowns Minister’s Certificate

The scandal stems from a Premium Times investigation revealing that UNN disowned Nnaji’s academic certificate. According to the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Simon Ortuanya, though Nnaji was admitted in 1981, there were no records showing that he graduated in 1985 as claimed.

“From our records, we cannot confirm that Mr. Geoffrey Uchechukwu Nnaji graduated from the University of Nigeria in July 1985,” Ortuanya said in a Freedom of Information response.

This contradicted an earlier letter from UNN’s Registrar, Celine Nnebedum, who had initially confirmed Nnaji’s graduation but later recanted, stating that his name was missing from the official list.

    Legal Battle and Missing Records

Nnaji has since taken legal action against the Minister of Education, the National Universities Commission (NUC), and UNN, accusing them of withholding his transcript despite a court order.

Ngwu alleged that the minister’s academic file was being “kept under lock and key” in the Vice-Chancellor’s office, suggesting foul play.

He also downplayed concerns about discrepancies in Nnaji’s names, insisting that “Uchenna” and “Uchechukwu” are interchangeable in Igbo culture.

    ‘Carry Your Cross’

In a strongly worded statement, Enugu’s Director of Information, Chukwuemeka Nebo, dismissed Nnaji’s claims, saying the minister must answer to the allegations directly.

“The honourable minister must carry his own cross and clear his name before Nigerians instead of dragging the Enugu State Government into issues that are entirely personal to him,” Nebo said.

He criticized Nnaji for sending aides to address the media instead of speaking for himself, describing it as an attempt to “run from accountability.”

“Why invite journalists and then fail to show up? If he truly has nothing to hide, he should face the press and explain,” Nebo added.

Nebo went on to list several inconsistencies that demand clarification — including claims that Nnaji failed key university courses, presented questionable NYSC documents, and submitted only his WASC certificate to INEC during the 2023 governorship race.

He also questioned the authenticity of the NYSC discharge certificate, which bore the signature of Col. Animashaun Braimoh, who only became NYSC Director-General two years after Nnaji’s supposed service year.

“If the minister himself swore in an affidavit that UNN never issued him a certificate, Nigerians deserve to know how he obtained the one he presented to the Senate,” Nebo stated.

As calls for transparency grow, both the public and media are urging Minister Nnaji to address the controversy head-on. The Enugu Government maintains it has no hand in the saga, emphasizing that the truth must come directly from the minister himself.

“These are questions Nigerians are asking,” Nebo concluded. “If Chief Nnaji is innocent, let him come forward and prove it.”

  • Minister Uche Nnaji Confesses: ‘UNN Never Issued Me Degree Certificate’.

Nigeria’s Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Uche Nnaji, has admitted that the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) never issued him a degree certificate despite claiming to be a graduate of the institution.

The revelation emerged in court filings obtained by journalists, where the minister acknowledged that although he was admitted into UNN in 1981 to study Microbiology/Biochemistry, he never collected a certificate because the university “refused to issue” one.

The disclosure comes amid a storm of forgery allegations after investigations revealed inconsistencies in the academic and NYSC documents he submitted for ministerial screening.

In his sworn affidavit, Nnaji claimed that UNN officials had been “uncooperative,” insisting that the certificate he has was not released by the university.

However, the UNN authorities have since disowned the document. In an official letter dated October 2, 2025, Vice Chancellor Prof. Simon Ortuanya stated that while records show Nnaji was once a student, there is no evidence that he graduated or fulfilled the requirements for a degree.

The university’s latest clarification contradicts an earlier 2023 letter from its Registrar claiming the minister graduated in July 1985 a statement later withdrawn by the school in May 2025.

The controversy has also drawn in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), which reportedly denied issuing the discharge certificate the minister has been parading.

With mounting questions over his academic qualifications, calls are growing for President Bola Tinubu’s administration to investigate how Nnaji was cleared during his ministerial screening.

As of press time, the minister has not issued any public statement regarding the fresh revelations.

Facts have emerged about how the minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Mr Uche Nnaji, approached a Federal High Court in Abuja for an interim injunction to bar the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) from releasing his academic record, an application turned down by the court.

The minister had dragged the Minister of Education, National Universities Commission (NUC), UNN, its Vice Chancellor, its Registrar and the Senate of the institution before the court, seeking a restraining order from acting on the request to release his records.

  • Tinubu’s Minister in Forgery Scandal as University disowns Certificate.

A major controversy has erupted over the academic qualifications of Nigeria’s Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Uche Nnaji, after the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), formally disowned the Bachelor of Science degree certificate he has been parading for decades.

In a letter dated October 2, 2025, the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Simon Ortuanya, confirmed that although Mr. Nnaji was admitted into the institution in 1981 to study Biological Sciences, he never completed his programme and was therefore not awarded any degree.

“From every available record, we are unable to confirm that Mr. Geoffrey Uchechukwu Nnaji graduated from the University of Nigeria in July 1985. There are no records of his completion of studies,” Prof. Ortuanya wrote.

“The University of Nigeria, Nsukka DID NOT and consequently, COULD NOT have issued the purported certificate, or at all, in July 1985 to Mr. Nnaji,” he added.

The minister’s credentials have under scrutiny since October 2023 after a whistleblower tip about inconsistencies in his documents.

Forgery Allegations Dating Back to 2023
Questions over Mr. Nnaji’s academic records first surfaced in July 2023 when President Bola Tinubu submitted his name to the Senate for ministerial confirmation. Critics alleged that the politician neither completed his studies at UNN nor participated in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme, despite presenting both certificates to various federal institutions.

During his screening on August 1, 2023, Mr. Nnaji confidently told lawmakers that he obtained a degree in Biochemistry and Microbiology from UNN in 1985 and served in Jos the following year. His statements were broadcast live on multiple television stations.

However, forensic scrutiny of the certificates submitted by the minister revealed glaring inconsistencies that cast doubt on their authenticity.

  • Catholic Priest,Rev. Fr. Matthew Eya, Shot Dead by UGM in Enugu.

Tension has gripped Enugu State after the brutal murder of a Catholic priest, Rev. Fr. Matthew Eya, by unidentified gunmen.

The incident occurred Friday evening along the Eha-Alumona–Eha-Ndiagu Road in Nsukka Local Government Area.
Until his death, Fr. Eya served as parish priest of St. Charles Catholic Church, Eha-Ndiagu.

Initial reports suggested the attack was a kidnapping  attempt, with claims that passengers were abducted after the gunmen opened fire on his vehicle. However, community sources insist the killing appeared to be a targeted assassination.

One witness told journalists that the priest was driving alone when armed men on motorcycles ambushed him near the ongoing Type C hospital project.

“They shot and deflated his tyres, forcing him to stop. Then they approached and fired multiple rounds at close range. This doesn’t look like a kidnapping,” the source said.

Fr. Eya, who hailed from Ugbaike in Enugu Ezike, Igbo-Eze North LGA, was described as a devoted cleric.

Confirming the tragedy, the Chancellor of the Catholic Diocese of Nsukka, Fr. Cajetan Iyidobi, expressed deep sorrow in a statement:
“Shocked to the marrow, it is with crushing pain and sorrow, yet with total submission to the will of the Almighty God and firm hope in the resurrection of the d+ad, that I inform you of the tragic death of yet another brother of ours, Rev. Fr. Matthew Eya.

He was shot dead yesterday, 19 September 2025, along the Eha-Alumona–Eha-Ndiagu Road. Let us remain ardent in prayer that God sees us through this period of devastating anguish. May his soul rest in peace. Amen.”
Catholic Priest,Rev. Eya, the parish priest of St. Charles Catholic Church, was shot dead on Friday evening while returning from Enugu.

Sources said the assailants, riding on a motorcycle, intercepted his vehicle near the site of an ongoing Type C hospital project. They reportedly shot at the tyres, forcing the car to stop, before firing multiple shots at him at close range.

While some accounts suggested the attack was linked to kidnapping, a source told DAILY POST that the incident appeared more like an assassination, as the priest was alone in the vehicle and no abduction took place.

“He was coming back from Enugu. The gunmen on a motorbike closed in on him close to where the Type C hospital project is ongoing.

“They demobilised the vehicle tyres and the vehicle was forced to a stop. They then got close and shot him several times at close range.

  • Man Killed During Faculty Bonfire Night At UNN.

A man identified as Power Autos, from Lejja, Nsukka, was reportedly killed Friday night during a bonfire event organized by the Faculty of Arts of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN).

THE WHISTLER gathered that the event occurred at the Archaeology Department, opposite UBA Hall of Fame. The deceased, it was learnt, was not an undergraduate of UNN.

A source that refused to be mentioned stated that, “The altercation began when Power Autos’ GLK vehicle accidentally scratched another car. The situation initially escalated but was quickly de-escalated by university security operatives.”

The source said Power Autos later left alongside his friends “but were ambushed within the UNN premises by people suspected to be the same people he had issues with before; they blocked his path with three vehicles”.

Those he was carrying managed to flee, according to the source, but the driver was not lucky. “He reportedly stepped out of his vehicle to assess the situation but was attacked and fatally stabbed in the throat with a knife. He died instantly.”

Our correspondent gathered that his attackers fled the scene. “They abandoned one of their vehicles in a gutter within the campus. UNN security swiftly raised an alarm. While attempting to escape through the Odenigwe Gate axis, four of the suspects were apprehended. They are currently in the custody at the Enugu State Criminal Investigation Department (CID), where investigations are ongoing.”

A security man attached to UNN, who declined to be mentioned for lack of jurisdiction to speak on the matter, told our reporter that, “The guy who stabbed the deceased tried to run away but his car fell into a ditch. He then abandoned the car there.”

The Police Public Relations Officer of Enugu State Police Command, SP Daniel Ndukwe, did not pick a call put across to him for confirmation.

UNN is yet to make an official statement on the incident. “Hold on till Monday, which is a working day,” our reporter was told by a guard attached to a bank near the scene of the incident.

  • Tinubu Government Leaves Us No Choice But To Go On Strike, Nigerian University Lecturers, ASUU, Tell Students, Parents.

ASUU accused the Tinubu government of using delay tactics, holding meetings that lead to resolutions that are never implemented.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has warned that it may be forced to resume strike action nationwide, accusing President Bola Tinubu’s government of insincerity, deliberate neglect, and failure to implement agreements reached with the union.

Speaking at a press conference broadcast on AIT and monitored by SaharaReporters on Thursday, the Zonal Coordinator of ASUU, Nsukka Zone, Christian Opata, said Nigerian lecturers have been left with no option but to return “to the trenches.”

“As you are aware, our union has been dialoguing with the government for over a decade on the same issues. Within this period, agreements were reached, timelines were given, but each time the government would brazenly and unashamedly jettison the agreements and fail to act within the timelines,” Opata stated.

He noted that while Nigerians may have been surprised that ASUU had not embarked on a strike in the last two years, this was not because the government had addressed its demands but because the union deliberately restrained itself to prove it was not a “strike-mongering body.”

“This was simply our way of demonstrating to Nigerians and the global community that we are not strike mongers as speculated. Having given the government time to show some elements of sincerity, seriousness, and display some level of humanity, we have no option but to put them and the public on notice that we may go back to the trenches (go back to strike),” he said.

Listing the core grievances fueling the looming strike, Opata said: “The bones of contention are legion, but prominent among them are the renegotiation of the 2009 agreements between ASUU and FGN, the gradual and purposeful erosion of university autonomy, the tactical withdrawal from the principles of collective bargaining, refusal to revitalize public universities, non-payment of withheld and outstanding salaries of our members for work they have done, non-payment of promotion arrears to staff, the criminal withholding of third-party deductions, the non-payment of the 25 to 30 percent wage increase, the starving of universities of funds, and the attempt to reload our members into slavery.”

  • Nigerian Soldiers ‘Force’ Driver To Swim Inside Muddy Water For Splashing Water On Them.

Nigerian soldiers in Nsukka, Enugu State, allegedly punished a driver by forcing him to swim inside dirty roadside water after he reportedly splashed them with water by mistake.

The footage, shared widely on X (formerly Twitter), captures the tense moment as uniformed soldiers stand over the man, ordering him into the muddy water.

The driver, visibly uncomfortable, obeys as onlookers record the incident.

According to eyewitness accounts, the confrontation began when the driver unknowingly drove through a water-filled pothole, splashing nearby soldiers.

Instead of resolving the matter calmly, the soldiers allegedly resorted to public humiliation.

The video has triggered a wave of condemnation from Nigerians, with many describing the soldiers’ actions as “unjust,” “petty,” and an “abuse of authority.”

Critics also argue that such behavior undermines public trust in the military, while others are calling for disciplinary action against those involved.

As of the time of this report, the Nigerian Army and Enugu State security agencies have yet to comment on the incident.

  • JAMB Alleges Identity Fraud by 2025 UTME Top Scorer Chinedu Okeke , Accuses Him of Manipulating Records for Dual Admissions.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has refuted growing social media support for Chinedu Okeke, a high-performing candidate in the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), accusing him of m@nipulating personal data and attempting to gain multiple admissions under different identities.

According to JAMB, Okeke is not from Anambra State, as widely claimed online, but from Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Area of Lagos State. This Lagos identity was used in 2021, when he sat for UTME and secured admission into the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, to study Medicine and Surgery.

He is currently in his fourth year in that programme. The Board questioned why a student nearing the end of a medical degree would attempt to register for UTME again in 2025, this time opting for Mechanical Engineering and presenting himself as a candidate from Anambra State.

“All candidate data is verified using the National Identification Number (NIN), and JAMB does not tamper with this information,” As of now, the University of Nigeria has not issued any statement refuting JAMB’s account.

The Board said it will continue to regard Okeke as a bonafide student of the university but will alert the Medical and Dental Council if the suspected identity m@nipulation is confirmed. Furthermore, JAMB accused Okeke of trying to expl%it admission advantages in two states, using Lagos State in 2021 and attempting to claim Anambra State in 2025.

“JAMB will not be swayed by social media noise or sentimental appeals,” Benjamin emphasized. “We remain committed to transparency, data integrity, and the rule of law.” He added, “Chinedu Okeke’s attempt to rewrite his identity raises serious questions. Our system is built on verifiable data from NIMC

The claim that JAMB retrieved the wrong data from NIMC is false and misleading. The evidence shows that Chinedu edited his previously submitted information before the 2025 UTME.”

  • They Threw Me Out In the Rain’ Anambra Widow Cries Out as In-Laws Demolish Her Home, Disown Her Children After Husband’s De@th.

A grieving widow in Anambra State, Mrs. Eze-Onwumere Vivian, is seeking urgent help after being forcefully evicted from her home and disowned by her in-laws following the de@th of her husband, Philimon, on December 17, 2023.

Speaking to SaharaReporters, the heartbroken mother accused her late husband’s brother, Isaiah Eze-Onwumere, and his children of throwing her and her children out, questioning the paternity of the children and claiming they do not belong to their late father.

Despite having evidence of their traditional marriage, conducted in her hometown in Nsukka and attended by several members of her late husband’s family, Mrs. Vivian said her in-laws have refused to acknowledge her status as his wife.

The situation escalated when the family allegedly attempted to sell the land where she and her son have been living. She said she was forced to intervene by placing a caveat at the Ministry of Land to stop the sale “No one supported me while my husband was s+ck,” she recalled.

“It was just me and his elder brother, Christian, who struggled and spent money. After he d+ed, they tried to sell the land just ten days later.” She claimed Isaiah and his children, especially one Ebuka, led the push to take over and sell the land. “Ebuka didn’t show up or contribute a dime when my husband was ill, yet he’s the one claiming the right to sell his property? I refused.”

Mrs. Vivian said her efforts to protect her late husband’s property and her children’s inheritance have been ignored, and she is now appealing to Anambra State Governor, Prof. Charles Soludo, and his wife to intervene.

The ordeal reached a dev@stating peak on July 4. According to her, while she was away buying household items, her belongings were thrown out into the rain and the house was demolished “I returned to find my things outside, soaked in the rain, and the roof of the house destroyed,” she said. “They claimed there was a court order, but I never received any notice”
