Kebbi Governor Assures Parents of Efforts to Rescue Abducted School girls.

Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, has assured families of the abducted students from Government Girls Comprehensive Senior Secondary School (GGCSS), Maga, that all necessary steps are being taken to secure their release.

The governor gave the assurance on Monday during a visit to Maga, where he met with security agencies, traditional rulers, and the affected parents behind closed doors.

“The unfortunate thing has already happened. They have abducted our children. We came here, we saw things for ourselves, and we met the parents whose children were taken,” Idris said.

“We gave them confidence and our word that we will do everything possible to ensure their children are rescued.

The Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, has stated that most b+ndit leaders and their followers have been neutralised, noting that only a few scattered elements remain. SaharaReporters previously reported that the Kebbi State Police confirmed the abduction of at least 25 students from the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School, Maga, Danko/Wasagu LGA, on Monday morning.

The attack by heavily armed bandits resulted in the d+ath of one staff member and injury to another, CSP Nafi’u Abubakar Kotarkoshi said. The incident reportedly occurred around 4am, with assailants engaging police officers in a gun battle.

Matawalle made his remarks during a visit to the Theatre Command Headquarters, following Juma’at prayers at the Command Mosque.

According to his Director of Information, Ibrahim Sule, he conveyed President Tinubu’s appreciation for the troops’ courage, patriotism, and achievements in dismantling bandit formations across the Northwest.

He told the soldiers: “Most key bandit leaders and their foot soldiers have been neutralised through your gallant effort. What remains now are scattered elements, and the Commander-in-Chief has directed that these must be completely eliminated. You have every support needed logistics, equipment, welfare, and morale to finish the job.”

Matawalle was received by Theatre Commander Maj. Gen. Warrah Bello Idris, who briefed him on recent operations, including neutralising high-value targets and reclaiming communities previously under bandit control. The minister praised the troops’ resilience, calling their sacrifices the foundation for peace returning to Zamfara and neighbouring states.

Addressing officers and soldiers, Matawalle urged sustained vigilance and discipline, assuring them that total victory was near. “Your sacrifices will never be in vain. The President, the nation, and soon the people of this region will sleep peacefully,” he declared.

According to Sowore, a country where schoolgirls are abducted and officers are murdered while leaders remain silent is a failed state.

Bandits have raided the Government Girls Comprehensive Senior Secondary School (GGCSS) in Maga, located in the Danko Wasagu area of Kebbi State, killing the Vice-Principal, Hassan Yakubu Makuku, and kidnapping an unspecified number of students.

Maga, a community in Danko/Wasagu Local Government Area, has suffered repeated attacks in recent times.A resident, Aliyu Yakubu, said the attackers stormed the school around 5 am on Monday without encountering resistance.

“The incident has thrown the entire community into panic. Residents of Maga are gripped with fear and sorrow,” he said.He added that the school principal, Makuku, was shot while attempting to shield the students during the invasion.

“He was h+t while trying to stop the bandits from taking the students. His death is a huge tragedy for both the school and the community,” he stated.

As of the time of filing this report, the police had yet to comment on the attack, as the command’s spokesperson, CSP Nafiu Abubakar, did not respond to repeated calls.

The Kebbi State Police Command has apprehended a 20-year-old woman, Maryam Atiku, from the Nasarawa area of Kamba in Dandi Local Government Area, for allegedly attempting to kill her newborn by burying her alive.

Police Public Relations Officer, Nafiu Abubakar, revealed that the incident occurred on June 25, 2025, when Maryam delivered a baby girl and allegedly strangled her with wrappers around the neck, covered her mouth, and buried her in a shallow grave at Malam Yaro bush.

The following day, June 26, a farmer, Alhaji Kabiru Muhammad, noticed a newly dug grave on his farmland. After taking a closer look, he raised alarm, prompting residents to dig it up, only to find the baby still alive.

The infant was rushed to the General Hospital, Kamba, where doctors confirmed her to be in stable condition.

Operatives from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) swiftly arrested the suspect, who allegedly admitted to the act during questioning.

Commissioner of Police, CP Bello M. Sani, condemned the incident, reiterating the command’s firm stance against child abuse and gender-based violence. He urged parents and community leaders to “protect children under their care and not jeopardize their future under any circumstances.”

He further acknowledged the role of the Kebbi First Lady, Zainab Nasir, for supporting the baby’s welfare, and commended farmer Alhaji Kabiru Muhammad for his timely intervention, which saved the child’s life.

Kebbi State has been thrown into mourning following the death of the Emir of Zuru, Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Sani Sami (retd).

The emir passed away on Saturday night at the age of 81.

The state Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Garba Umar-Dutsinmari, confirmed the monarch’s death in a statement released to journalists in Birnin Kebbi on Sunday.

According to the statement, the Emir died in a London hospital after a brief illness.

He is survived by four wives and seven children.

In a condolence message, the Kebbi State Government expressed its deep grief over the passing of the revered traditional ruler, describing him as a respected leader whose contributions to peace and development in Zuru Emirate and Kebbi State will be remembered.
