• Ogun State Raises Alarm Over Rising Mental Health Cases, Treats 10,000 Patients in Six Months.

Dr. Tomi Coker, Ogun State’s Commissioner for Health, has expressed concern over the increasing prevalence of mental health disorders, with 10,000 patient visits recorded in the first half of 2025, including 1,000 new cases.

Represented by Dr. Kayode Oladeinde, the Permanent Secretary, she spoke at an event marking the 2025 World Mental Health Day, themed “Access to Services: Mental Health in Catastrophes and Emergencies.” Coker highlighted that over 90% of Nigerians with mental health issues lack access to adequate care due to limited services, stigma, and costs.

She emphasized that mental health is a fundamental human right and noted the growing burden in Ogun State. Data from mental health facilities in Abeokuta, Ijebu Ode, Ilaro, and Ota revealed prevalent conditions such as psychosis, neurosis, epilepsy, depression, and substance use disorders. To address this, the state has formed a 26-member Mental Health Action Committee, chaired by Dr. Abayomi Olajide, a consultant psychiatrist at the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Aro, Abeokuta.

Coker called for collective action, urging families to foster open discussions on mental health, employers to create supportive work environments, and religious and community leaders to promote compassion and care access. She also encouraged the media to report responsibly to reduce stigma and inspire hope. The commissioner reassured residents that the government is committed to supporting those struggling with mental health challenges.

Additionally, Coker announced that community mental health hospitals have been established in Abeokuta, Ilaro, Ijebu-Ode, and Ota to improve access to care across the state.

  • Man in viral video beating wife arrested, cause revealed.

The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of one Fatai Quadri after a viral video allegedly showed him violently assaulting his wife, Rukayat, in the Ilese-Ijebu area of the state, with the cause also revealed.

The spokesperson of the Command and a Chief Superintendent of Police, CSP Omolola Odutola, confirmed the arrest on Saturday.

Odutola, in a statement she issued to newsmen, explained that the incident occurred on Monday.

She said the suspect was captured on video inflicting fist blows on his wife, leaving her with bodily injuries.

According to her, operatives of Igbeba Divisional Police Headquarters, Ijebu Ode promptly arrested the suspect.

The Police Public Relations Officer disclosed that preliminary investigations linked the assault to a marital dispute arising from allegations of infidelity.

She revealed that the suspect had allegedly transferred the ownership of a 10-room en-suite apartment, jointly built with his wife, to another woman.

This, she explained, allegedly provoked the violent attack after Rukayat demanded explanation on this.

  • Ex-Governor Gbenga Daniel Accuses Ogun Governor Abiodun of Targeting His Properties for Demolition.

Senator Gbenga Daniel, a former Ogun State governor now representing Ogun East, has accused current Governor Dapo Abiodun of targeting him with politically motivated demolition orders against multiple properties in Sagamu.

On Friday, August 8, demolition notices were posted on Daniel’s private residence (The Asoludero Court), Conference Hotels Limited, and its annexe around 4 PM. The notices cited alleged construction violations and gave just three days’ warning before potential demolition.

Daniel dismissed the charges as baseless, noting that his properties predate the regulations being cited against them. The Asoludero Court was constructed in 2004, Conference Hotel in 2013, and the annexe in 2015 - all built years before the Ogun State Urban and Regional Planning and Development Law No. 61 of 2022 took effect.

“This is nothing but clear political persecution,” Daniel stated, criticizing the administration for attempting to retroactively apply new laws to older structures that were legally built under previous regulations.

The former governor also challenged the legal process, arguing that proper procedures require sequential notifications with adequate time intervals between contravention notices, quit notices, and any demolition threats.

This latest controversy follows a September 2023 incident where DATKEM Plaza in Ijebu Ode, owned by Daniel’s wife Yeye Olufunke Daniel, was demolished by state officials. That case remains in court, with Daniel claiming the state has lost several applications, suggesting their actions lacked legal foundation.

Governor Abiodun previously defended the 2023 demolition, stating that no one is above building regulations and that even his own properties would face demolition if they violated codes. The government justified that action by claiming the five-story plaza lacked proper permits.

Daniel has called for public condemnation of what he terms an abuse of power and vowed to pursue all legal remedies to hold the governor accountable for what he characterizes as lawless actions.

  • Kabiyesi Was More Than a Royal Father to Me” – Tinubu Pays Tribute to Late Awujale
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid a heartfelt tribute to the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, describing him as more than just a royal father — but a confidante and source of unwavering wisdom.

In a statement shared on Sunday via X, the President mourned the monarch, whose death came just hours apart from that of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

“Kabiyesi was more than a royal father to me. He was a confidante, a guide, and a man of truth whose wisdom never failed to steady those who sought it,” Tinubu wrote.

He praised the revered traditional ruler’s 65-year reign as one defined by dignity, courage, and deep devotion to his people, noting that Oba Adetona's passing has left a great void in Nigeria’s traditional institutions, especially in Yorubaland.

Tinubu, who attended the monarch’s eighth-day Fidau prayers in Ijebu-Ode, highlighted the Awujale’s lasting legacy of leadership, integrity, and service.

“His voice, leadership, and generosity will echo far beyond Ijebuland,” Tinubu added.

He concluded his tribute by praying for Allah’s mercy on the late monarch and comfort for those mourning his loss.
