Thousands of doctors in England began a five-day strike on Friday, marking the 13th walkout by medics since March 2023.  The action started at 0700 GMT and involves resident doctors—those below consultant level—who make up half of the hospital medical workforce. The Labour government’s health minister, Wes Streeting, criticised the strike, accusing the British Medical Association (BMA) of “choosing confrontation over care.”  Writing in the Daily Telegraph, he said, “This strike isn’t about fairness any more. It’s about political posturing.” He insisted the government would not shift on pay, noting “a 28.9 per cent pay rise over the last three years and the highest pay award across the entire public sector in the last two.” But the BMA maintains that doctors still need a 26 percent pay increase to restore earnings to their real value from two decades ago.  The union is also calling for more training posts, warning that demand wildly exceeds supply. In some cases, more than 30,000 doctors are competing for only 10,000 training places required to progress toward consultant roles. Kenyan authorities have arrested three Nigerian nationals for alleged cyber fraud and immigration offences after residents reported suspicious activity in a rented apartment in Mwea, Kirinyaga County. The suspects — Peter Chukwujekwu, Alazor Chukulute Sunday, and Nnalue Chiagozie Samwel — were arrested on 12 November 2025 in a joint operation by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and immigration officers in Mwaliko Estate, Ngurubani. According to Streamline, the DCI said, “A well-coordinated multi-agency raid in Mwaliko Estate has blown the lid off a suspected cyber fraud ring operated by three Nigerian nationals.”  The raid followed reports from residents about unusual movements and late-night activity in the apartment. Investigators recovered 21 phones, 79 SIM cards, a Dell laptop, and several credit cards believed to be linked to online fraud. Authorities say the items suggest a network possibly involved in identity theft and financial scams. Checks also showed the three were in Kenya illegally, with expired entry passes and no work permits. They claimed to be “running an online business,” but detectives are probing possible ties to wider cybercrime groups. “The three are currently cooling their heels in custody as investigators dig deeper into their network,” Streamline added. The suspects remain in custody as forensic teams analyse the seized devices and trace possible links to other operations locally and abroad. Their arrest comes amid a surge in cyber threats in Kenya. The Communications Authority recorded 2.54 billion incidents between January and March 2025, a major rise from late 2024. Many Kenyans have also fallen victim to phishing emails and fake text messages. Kenya has strengthened penalties under the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act of 2018 and its 2025 amendment, which impose fines of up to KSh 20 million and jail terms of up to 10 years for major cyber offences.

This allows authorities to monitor citizens holding foreign bank accounts or properties. Oyedele also discussed Nigeria’s engagement with global tech companies to ensure they remit Value Added Tax (VAT) on services provided in the country. “If a local shop selling phones charges VAT, online platforms shouldn’t get a free pass. We engaged them collaboratively, and today Nigeria earns billions from digital taxes without confrontation,” he said. Addressing public concerns about the new Capital Gains Tax (CGT) framework, Oyedele clarified that the law, which takes effect January 1, 2026, will not be applied retroactively. The Federal Government has abolished the use of indigenous languages as a medium of instruction in Nigerian schools, making English the sole language of teaching from early childhood to tertiary level. Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, announced the new directive on Wednesday at the Language in Education International Conference 2025 organised by the British Council in Abuja. The two-day conference, themed “Language, Education and Inclusion: Empowering Every Learner,” brought together policymakers, educators, and experts from across Africa, South Asia, and the UK to discuss strategies for improving learning outcomes through language. Dr. Alausa explained that while preserving Nigeria’s local languages remains important for cultural identity, English offers a more effective and globally competitive medium for learning. “The English language should be used to teach our students at all levels as a means of instruction,” he said. “Over the years, the use of mother tongues in schools has contributed to poor performance in national examinations. The national policy on language has therefore been cancelled.” He described English as a “unifying tool” for Nigeria’s diverse population, noting that research showed students taught primarily in English perform better in exams like WAEC, NECO, and JAMB. According to him, the decision marks a shift from emotional attachment to local language identity toward evidence-based education policy. Meanwhile, the British Council reaffirmed its support for inclusive and equitable learning across Sub-Saharan Africa. Julian Parry, Director of English Programmes for the region, said language can serve as “a bridge to inclusion, identity, and opportunity.” Also speaking, Chikodi Onyemerela, the British Council’s Director of Programmes in Nigeria, highlighted the organisation’s Pan-Ethnic Classrooms Programme, launched in 2015, which helps teachers apply inclusive and language-responsive teaching practices.
