  • Rescued Niger Pupils Reveal Bandits Forced Them to Sleep on Trampoline in Bush

A rescued pupil from Niger State, Florence Michael, has recounted the harsh conditions she and other abducted schoolchildren endured while held by bandits. She revealed they were forced to sleep on a trampoline in a bush near a river and were threatened with beatings if they made noise. The 100 pupils, abducted from St. Mary’s School in Papiri on November 21, were handed over to the Niger State Government by the National Security Adviser’s office after a joint rescue operation involving the DSS, Armed Forces, and other agencies. The federal government announced new protection measures for schools in high-risk areas, while Governor Umaru Bago described the rescue as a major relief. The children were released by the kidnappers near Lumma and Wawa and transported to Minna for safety.

  • "DJ Cuppy Didn’t Like people from her country When We Were Together" — Ex-Fiancé, Ryan Taylor alleges.

Ryan Taylor, British boxer and ex-fiancé of Nigerian DJ and billionaire heiress Florence Otedola, popularly known as DJ Cuppy, has made surprising claims about their relationship during a recent appearance on the Ladders podcast.

Speaking about their time together, Taylor alleged that Cuppy “didn’t like people from her country” and even discouraged him from employing her country people in his business.

“Is it mad if I told you that she didn’t like people from her country?” he said. “She’ll come into my business and she didn’t want me to have her fellow country people as staff. We used to walk in the mall and people would run from their counters and ask for money.”

The couple, who got engaged in November 2022 but reportedly split in mid-2023, often made headlines for their public displays of affection and luxury lifestyle. However, their breakup drew speculation from fans after both unfollowed each other on social media and stopped sharing posts together.

Despite his remarks, Taylor ended on a reflective note about their relationship, saying, “Everything happens for a reason. The time that I met her, where we both were at the time, it had to happen. No regrets, lesson learnt.”

  • Outrage at UNICAL as VC Sends Dentistry Students Home Over Inflated Admissions.

Tension has gripped the University of Calabar (UNICAL) following the Vice Chancellor’s decision to send hundreds of students in the Faculty of Dentistry and Dental Surgery home after the institution admitted more students than approved by regulatory authorities.

SaharaReporters learned that the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Florence Banku Obi, issued the directive during a meeting with the affected students and their parents on Thursday, July 10. The move follows the discovery that the school had exceeded the admission quota set by the Nigerian Medical and Dental Council.

A memo from the Provost’s Office, College of Medical Sciences (Ref: UC/CMS/PO/209), dated July 7, 2025, invited all dental students and their parents to the meeting. Though the agenda wasn’t disclosed, the letter signed by Mrs. Anita B. Eyo, Deputy Registrar/College Secretary was titled: “Notice of Meeting with the Vice-Chancellor."

At the meeting, students from 200 to 600 levels were informed they must return home with their parents until the school resolves the over-admission crisis.

Affected students, many of whom have paid millions in tuition, accommodation, and other fees, expressed frustration and anger. One student described the situation as a “huge injustice,” accusing the university of greed for admitting far more than the approved number of students.

“The Medical Council gave a quota of 10, but the university admitted over 300 students in one class,” a student lamented. Another student said the Vice Chancellor banned all forms of protest, worsening the students’ sense of helplessness.

“We’ve been spending money on school fees, rent, books, and feeding—now they’re telling us to go home like we don’t matter,” she said. Students have demanded that the decision be reversed, calling for accountability and justice. As of now, the situation remains unresolved, and tensions are high within the campus community.
