  • Edo Rights Group Accuses Uromi DPO of Harassing Activist, Demands Police Action

The Edo State Civil Society Coalition for Human Rights has accused the Divisional Police Officer of Uromi Division, CSP Monday Agbon, of intimidation, abuse of office, and targeted harassment of activist Comrade General Henry Oziegbe.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the coalition said Oziegbe, a known social justice advocate, has faced sustained reprisals allegedly linked to his criticism of police extortion and systemic injustice in Uromi.

The group disclosed that multiple petitions had earlier been submitted to the Edo State Commissioner of Police, accusing the DPO of extortion, bribery, and abuse of authority. Rather than submit to investigation, the coalition alleged, the officer responded with threats, intimidation, and attempts to criminalise the activist.

According to the statement, jointly signed by Coordinator Marxist Kola Edokpayi and Secretary-General Comrade Aghatise Raphael, the DPO allegedly threatened to fabricate charges against Oziegbe and later branded him a cultist—an accusation the coalition described as false, reckless, and dangerous.

The coalition further claimed that following a directive from the Commissioner of Police to review one of the petitions, the DPO sought to use the Anti-Cultism Unit in Benin City to arrest Oziegbe. However, the unit reportedly declined after finding no factual or evidentiary basis for the allegations.

“The Anti-Cultism Unit, acting with commendable professional integrity, refused to comply after establishing that the claims were entirely unfounded,” the group said.

Describing Oziegbe as “a conscientious dissenter and defender of the oppressed,” the coalition argued that any attempt to arrest or detain him would amount to a violation of his constitutional rights. Citing Section 35 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), it warned against arbitrary arrest, detention, or enforced disappearance.

The group also stated that any harm or unlawful action against the activist would be held personally against the DPO and any officers involved.

Consequently, the coalition called on the Inspector-General of Police, the Police Service Commission, the National Human Rights Commission, and other oversight bodies to intervene, investigate the allegations, and prevent what it described as a growing culture of impunity.

“We will not capitulate. We will not be intimidated. An injury to one remains an injury to all,” the coalition declared.

  • Physically Challenged Edo Artisan Alleges DSS Seized His Car for Writing ‘Nigerians Are Hungry, Tinubu Is the Worst President’ in Benin City

A physically challenged artisan, Solomon Umudi, has accused operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) of unlawfully seizing his car in Benin City, Edo State, over political messages he wrote on the vehicle criticising the Nigerian government and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. According to Umudi, the inscriptions included statements such as “Nigerians are hungry,” “Tinubu is the worst President,” “No judiciary in Nigeria,” and “Nigerian pastors have failed us,” which he said reflected his personal experiences and the widespread hardship facing ordinary citizens.

Narrating his ordeal, Umudi said DSS operatives did not invite him for questioning or follow due process before taking his car. He alleged that the officers used deception around the Akezuwa and Stadium Road areas of Benin City, pretending to cause an accident before forcefully seizing the vehicle and driving away with it. He insisted that the car was not obstructing traffic and that he was never informed where it was taken.

Umudi, who earns a living making car seats, lamented what he described as increasing suppression of small business owners, youths, and vulnerable citizens amid worsening economic conditions and insecurity. He said he often carries a generator in his car to power his work due to the lack of electricity and recounted how he previously paid ransom to secure the release of a kidnapped student, highlighting the impact of insecurity on everyday Nigerians.

Describing the seizure of his car as an attempt to silence him, Umudi insisted that freedom of expression is a fundamental right in a democratic society and vowed to continue speaking out against hardship, poor governance, and what he sees as government failure. He called on authorities to listen to citizens’ concerns rather than intimidate or suppress dissent, warning that actions taken against him would not deter his resolve to keep expressing his views.

  • Edo Governor Okpebholo’s Alleged Loyalist Who Brutalised Female Worker Over ₦40,000 Salary Petitions Police to Arrest Victim as Officers Allegedly Shield Him

A political enforcer allegedly loyal to Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, identified as Adam Ehigiamusoe, popularly known as Shaba, has sparked outrage after petitioning the Nigeria Police to arrest a female employee he is accused of brutally assaulting over an unpaid ₦40,000 salary. The incident reportedly occurred on December 23, 2025, at Destiny O Hotel Suites in Benin City, which Shaba owns.

According to sources, the victim, Love Nehizena, also known as Bella, was beaten severely after demanding payment of her outstanding salary. Videos obtained by SaharaReporters showed her covered in blood with visible injuries, suggesting an assault described by witnesses as near-fatal. Despite the severity of the attack, Shaba was allegedly never arrested, reportedly boasting that his political connections made him untouchable.

Sources disclosed that the Edo State Commissioner of Police had earlier directed Shaba to report himself, but he allegedly ignored the order and instead, through his lawyer, submitted a petition to the Zone 5 Police Headquarters in Benin, accusing the victim. Shockingly, police action reportedly followed against Bella rather than the alleged attacker, with a senior officer, CSP Christopher Ereshe, inviting her for questioning, raising concerns of intimidation and victim persecution.

Witnesses expressed alarm that Shaba, whom police claimed they could not locate, was publicly seen days later distributing bags of rice in Benin City and freely engaging law enforcement. Bella, a single mother, narrated how she was beaten with wires, planks, and wooden objects, spat on, insulted for her poor background, and threatened with death if she reported the incident. Her phone was also destroyed during the assault.

Human rights advocates and residents have condemned the episode as a gross abuse of power, politicisation of policing, and a dangerous example of how poverty and political influence are weaponised to silence vulnerable citizens. The case has intensified public calls for accountability and justice amid fears that political protection may obstruct due process.

  • Amnesty International Condemns Nigerian Police Over Failure to Arrest Attackers of Filmmaker Pedro Obaseki in Benin City

Amnesty International has strongly condemned the Nigerian Police for failing to arrest the assailants who abducted and publicly humiliated Nigerian filmmaker Dr. Don Pedro Obaseki in Benin City, Edo State. The human rights organization described the incident as “barbaric and unlawful,” emphasizing that it violated basic principles of due process and human dignity.

  • Hoodlums Allegedly Linked to Edo Governor Okpebholo’s Loyalist Tony Kabaka Burn Home of UK-Based Critic Albert Obazee on New Year’s Eve Amid Threats and Political Tension

Suspected hoodlums allegedly working for Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo’s loyalist, Tony Kabaka, have been accused of attacking and setting ablaze the home of UK-based Edo-born media critic, Albert Obazee, on New Year’s Eve in Benin City. Eyewitnesses said a large group of young men armed with petrol- and kerosene-filled bottles forced their way into the residence, smashed windows, destroyed household items, poured accelerants, and set the building on fire, leaving it severely damaged and uninhabitable.

Videos obtained by SaharaReporters showed the house engulfed in flames, with petrol bottles visible among the debris, suggesting a premeditated attack. An occupant of the compound said up to 30 armed youths stormed the premises, while others confirmed the incident anonymously, citing fear of intimidation.

The attack reportedly came days after Governor Okpebholo publicly threatened Obazee in a video interview, vowing that he would be imprisoned and barred from freely entering Nigeria. The governor admitted to closely monitoring Obazee’s social media posts, many of which criticised his administration.

Sources alleged that the arson followed Obazee’s social media claim that Tony Kabaka had been arrested by the EFCC over alleged misconduct, a claim Kabaka later confirmed by admitting he was invited and questioned by the commission. About 24 hours after the post, Obazee raised alarm that his multimillion-naira property had been vandalised and burned.

As of the time of reporting, neither the Edo State government nor the Nigeria Police Force had issued an official statement or announced arrests. Obazee said the attack has left him, his family, and associates living in fear, calling on authorities to urgently investigate the incident and ensure accountability.

  • Actor Dr Don Pedro Obaseki Abd¥cted, Str+pped, and H¥miliated while playing football

Nigerian actor and cultural advocate, Dr Don Pedro Obaseki, has recounted a harrowing experience of abd¥ction, a+sa¥lt, and public h¥miliation by a group of men who dragged him to the Oba of Benin Palace on Sunday in Benin City.

Speaking to African Independent Television (AIT), Obaseki said the incident occurred around 11:00–11:30 a.m. while playing football with Uwa All Stars at Uwa Primary School. He described how ass+ilants, some armed, suddenly invaded the ground, abd¥cted him, and forcibly dragged him through several streets including Igbesawan Street, Akpakpava Road, and Ring Road where he was stri+ped n@ked in public before being taken to the palace premises. Obaseki, a cousin of former Edo Governor Godwin Obaseki, said the att@ckers claimed they were sent by the palace but failed to show any form of identification when requested.

“I begged them to show me some form of ID, of course not. I was dragged, beaten severely, manhandled… and taken into the palace,” he explained. The actor said the ordeal left him tra¥matized, especially given his lifelong contributions to Benin culture.

Following the incident, he was taken to a police station along Oba Market Road, where the Edo State Commissioner of Police intervened, personally visiting him multiple times before ordering his release.

Obaseki revealed that the alleged offence stemmed from comments he made during a recent visit to London, where he wished “Edo gha to’kperewa” (“May Edo people live long and prosper”) instead of “Oba gha to’kpere” (“May the Oba live long and prosper”), which he was told constituted a serious cultural violation.

Public outrage has continued to grow, with calls for accountability and a full investigation into the actions of those involved in the as+a¥lt and abd¥ction. The incident occurs against the backdrop of long-standing tension between the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, and former Governor Godwin Obaseki, particularly over disputes surrounding cultural heritage, administration of Benin artifacts, and traditional authority in Edo State.

  • ARMY, EFCC in Fresh Synergy against Graft in Edo

The Commander, 4 Brigade, Nigerian Army, Brigadier General A. O. Balogun has pledged the support of the Nigeria Army to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, in its fight against corruption, economic and financial crimes.

Balogun made this pledge on Monday December 8, 2025 while on a courtesy visit to the Benin Zonal Directorate of the Commission. According to the General, who recently assumed office as the Commander of 4 Brigade, Benin City, the EFCC needs the support of every Nigerian given its role as the foremost anti-corruption agency in Nigeria.

The General further noted that the Commission needed the support of critical stakeholders to successfully block or trace the movement of funds to nip financial offences in the bud. "If we can detect the flow of funds, we can nip such crimes in the bud."

He disclosed that the Commission and the military has had a long history of collaboration, including training of personnel, curtailing illegal oil bunkering and a host of others . "One of the reasons for our visit is to familiarise ourselves with the leadership of the Commission so that we can build on the existing relationships between the two institutions. It is not about competition but about collaboration. It doesn't matter who kills the snake as much as the snake is killed."
He revealed the military is willing to collaborate and offer any kind of support to the Commission whenever it is called upon to do so.

Responding, the Acting Zonal Director of the Benin, Deputy Commander of the Commission, DCE Sa'ad Hanafi Sa'ad commended the army general and his men for their visit. Our interest and your interest are the same, which is to have a better Nigeria and so we are willing to collaborate with you."

Oniarah, also known by his aliases Kelvin Ibruvwe and Kelvin Ezigbe, was arrested on September 25, 2013, in a joint operation by the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigerian Army. He was subsequently convicted for multiple counts of kidnapping, armed robbery, and terrorism-related offences that terrorised parts of Delta, Edo, Anambra, and Rivers States for years.

    Trail of Violence and Terror
Before his arrest, Kelvin was the leader of a feared criminal syndicate responsible for high-profile kidnappings and killings. Among his victims was renowned human rights lawyer, Barrister Mike Ozekhome (SAN), abducted on August 24, 2013, along the Auchi–Benin expressway.

Other victims linked to his gang included:

A serving judge of the Edo State Judiciary,
A female Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) official,
Dr. Chudi Nwike, former Deputy Governor of Anambra State, who was killed in captivity,
Several National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members and security personnel.
Kelvin’s network operated from camps in Warri and Kokori (Delta State), Ugbokolo (Benue), Benin City (Edo), and Aba (Abia State). His reign of terror also saw the killing of numerous policemen and soldiers during deadly ambushes.

    Defiance Against the State
In a chilling episode that underscored his notoriety, Oniarah publicly issued a 60-day ultimatum to the Federal Government in September 2013, demanding the release of his detained gang members or face nationwide bloodshed — a threat that prompted one of the most extensive manhunts in Nigeria’s history.

    Conviction and Release
Oniarah was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment in October 2023, with his sentence backdated to 2013. It was later reduced to 13 years for what prison officials described as “good conduct” and participation in the National Open University of Nigeria correctional education programme.

His sudden release under the Tinubu administration’s controversial amnesty programme has sparked a storm of criticism from security analysts and victims’ families, who argue that granting clemency to an unrepentant criminal undermines justice and the fight against violent crime.

Kelvin’s freedom, after 12 years behind bars, now raises serious questions about the moral compass of the nation’s justice system

  • NEMA advises Edo flood-prone residents to relocate upland as River Niger rises.

The National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, Edo State office has issued a riot act to residents living at the bank of the River Niger in the state to relocate to higher grounds.

The Head of Benin Operation Office, Kenoma Ojuederie gave the charge during the customers week celebration in Benin City.

Ojuederie said the charge became necessary following the rising level of water on the River Niger and to also avoid loss of lives.

According to him, before now, we have done sensitisation and awareness campaigns to communities in flood-prone areas to get prepared and move to higher ground.

“From now on, we are expecting the flood because water has been released from some dams, and floods are going to come due to the release of water from dams.

“So, as part of measures to avoid casualties, I advised the residents to move to higher ground while those in the area where there are IDP camps should move there and the state government would cater for those in the camp,” he said.

He added that the customers’ week was to appreciate people in emergency management who are victims of disasters and stakeholders.

Earlier, the Edo State Executive Secretary, State Management Agency, SEMA, Jerry Idahosa, explained that the water is already rising, but there is no cause for alarm yet.

  • Fire razes Oba market.

A late-night fire on Wednesday razed part of the Oba Market in Benin City, even as reconstruction work on the facility is still ongoing.
The Chairman of Oredo Local Government Area, Engr. Gabriel Iduseri, who confirmed the incident, said the fire was caused by a solar panel malfunction.

This is the second time in five years that the popular market has been affected by fire.

According to eyewitnesses, they were in their shops opposite the market when they noticed smoke coming from a section where reconstruction work was ongoing.

They said they immediately mobilized, along with local vigilantes, while the Divisional Police Officer, DPO, in charge of Oba Market Police Station led his men to the scene.

The DPO reportedly alerted the fire service, which joined civilians in battling the flames for about three hours before the fire was contained.

Addressing newsmen after inspecting the scene, Engr. Iduseri said that only one shop was affected, praising the swift response of firefighters and security personnel, which prevented the fire from spreading.

“We learnt that a solar panel caused the fire. We will suspend further installation of solar panels and conduct a thorough inspection of all electrical connections in the market to prevent future incidents.

“I also want to assure the affected traders that we will support them to return to business. Thankfully, no lives were lost, and the damage was minimal. The Oredo Local Government was fully on ground to prevent any case of looting,” he said.

  • Health Experts Warn Against Sexual Acts That Could Cause Stroke or Paralysis.

According to the report released by Nigerian Tribune on 6th October, 2025.

Medical professionals are raising alarm over sexual practices involving choking or strangulation, saying they can have grave health consequences.

According to research and expert observations, these practices may cut off airflow or restrict blood flow to the brain, increasing risk of serious neurological damage including stroke and paralysis.

Dr. Mark Kamtchoua, Medical Director of St. Jude Clinic, Benin City, said most deaths or collapses “occur when the person, whether the man or woman, is about to reach orgasm.”

He warned that during this period “a lot of calories are wasted,” especially if a person has underlying conditions like hypertension and has used sex-enhancing drugs.

According to a young-adult brain-morphology study, frequent exposure to choking or strangulation during sex was linked to structural changes in the cortex.

The study found “increased cortical thickness, reduced gyrification, and alterations in fractal dimensionality” suggesting such practices might affect brain maturation.

Experts also pointed out that non-fatal strangulation can result in “loss of consciousness, indicating at least mild acquired brain injury, stroke, seizures, motor and speech disorders, and paralysis.”

The restriction of oxygen intake and blood flow to the brain during choking or strangulation are central mechanisms.

  • NDLEA operatives caused stampede in Benin as they fire gunshots to arrest fleeing driver for brushing their vehicle.

The serenity of the Upper Sokponba Road axis of Benin City, Edo State where the state command of the Nigerian Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) is located was on Friday morning shattered as passersby, traders, and motorists fled in different directions in confusion as operatives of the agency began to shoot sporadically as they pursued an articulated vehicle which was said to have hit their vehicle and refused to stop.

Though the NDLEA had not made an official statement on the incident, a source who pleaded anonymity, however stated that the operatives eventually succeeded in apprehending the driver and had taken him into custody.

It was gathered that the sporadic gunshots which lasted for more than five minutes at the gate of the Agency sent people running in different directions as the desperate driver raced towards Oka Market, which is about five hundred meters from the state command.

The shooting was said to have started as the trailer approached the gate of the NDLEA where officers had already been alerted by their colleagues on its pursuit, deflating about seven of its tyres, while the driver kept moving.
A reliable source explained that the driver brushed their vehicle somewhere along the way and refused to stop so that they could settle the matter hence the gunshots and deflation of the tyres of the vehicle to force the driver to stop.

According to him, “It was a simple thing; they jammed our men, but the officers tried to stop him so that they could settle, but the driver refused to stop. That is why the men have been shooting to stop him. Even after bursting about seven tyres, he was still running, but we have caught him, and they are bringing him back to our office”.
