• Amnesty International Condemns Nigerian Police Over Failure to Arrest Attackers of Filmmaker Pedro Obaseki in Benin City

Amnesty International has strongly condemned the Nigerian Police for failing to arrest the assailants who abducted and publicly humiliated Nigerian filmmaker Dr. Don Pedro Obaseki in Benin City, Edo State. The human rights organization described the incident as “barbaric and unlawful,” emphasizing that it violated basic principles of due process and human dignity.

Obaseki, a cousin of former Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki, was seized by a group of men allegedly acting on behalf of the Benin Traditional Council. He was dragged to the Oba of Benin’s palace, stripped publicly, and forced to kneel and walk on his knees. The attackers did not present identification or legal authority for their actions.

Amnesty International called on law enforcement to investigate the incident, bring the perpetrators to justice, and urged the Oba’s palace to dissociate itself from the unlawful acts. The organization highlighted that such repression undermines civic freedoms and human rights in Edo State.

  • Rights Group Petitions IGP Over Alleged Torture, Killings at Imo Police ‘Tiger Base’

The Coalition Against Police Tiger Base Impunity (CAPTI) has petitioned the Inspector General of Police, alleging systemic torture, nightly executions, enforced disappearances, extortion, and judicial disregard at the Imo State Police Command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit, known as “Tiger Base.” The petition cites over 200 recorded deaths, torture chambers, obstruction of autopsies, hostage-taking of relatives, and promotions of implicated officers. CAPTI demands urgent investigations, accountability for senior officers, compliance with court orders, unhindered access for human rights bodies, and reparations for victims of what it describes as widespread and institutionalized human rights abuses between 2021 and 2025.

  • Nursing Mother, Baby Held in Nigerian Prison Months After Protest Arrest

The Nigerian Police have continued to detain a nursing mother, Jamila Ibrahim, and her infant daughter at the Suleja Correctional Centre months after their arrest during a peaceful protest linked to the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) in Abuja.

Jamila was arrested on March 28 at Wuse Market while carrying her one-month-old baby. Family sources say she is not a member of the IMN but had joined the protest voluntarily. Since then, she has reportedly been held without trial or formal charges, with no notification given to her family at the time of arrest.

Sources within the Shiite group and her family claim that both mother and child remain in custody in degrading conditions, sparking outrage over the treatment of the infant, who has committed no crime.

The protest, part of the 2025 International Quds Day procession, was violently disrupted by the Nigerian Army’s Guard Brigade using live ammunition, leaving several dead and many injured. The IMN has condemned the crackdown, accusing the government of double standards—publicly criticizing Israel’s actions in Gaza while attacking pro-Palestine demonstrators at home.

So far, 380 protesters, including women and children, are believed to have been arrested, while the full casualty count remains unknown.
