US angry over Nigeria’s rejection of military base, not Christian killings CSO alleges. A civil society organisation, Grassroot Advocacy for Peace and Good Governance, has claimed that the recent threats from U.S. President Donald Trump were not about alleged religious persecution but rather a reaction to Nigeria’s refusal to approve a U.S. military base and deportee resettlement deal. Addressing journalists in Birnin Kebbi on Monday, the group’s chairman, Usman Muhammed Anache, alleged that Washington had been pressuring Abuja to allow the establishment of a U.S. military base following the withdrawal of American forces from Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso. According to him, Nigeria’s decision to decline the proposal, coupled with its recent alignment with BRICS, the economic bloc led by Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, may have further strained relations between the two countries. “The U.S. is displeased because Nigeria refused its request to set up a military base and to house American deportees. They have now resorted to using religion, knowing how sensitive Nigerians are to faith-related issues,” Anache said. He commended Nigerian Christian leaders who openly rejected Trump’s claim of “Christian genocide,” noting that terrorist attacks in the country have affected both Muslims and Christians alike. Anache further praised the Federal Government for what he described as its steadfastness in defending Nigeria’s sovereignty and promoting peace across West Africa. “The divisive tactic of using religion to destabilize Nigeria will never succeed. This has been their plan since independence, but Nigeria has always stood united,” he added. Trump had last week accused Nigeria of allowing the mass killing of Christians and threatened possible U.S. military action, a remark that has continued to attract condemnation from within and outside the country.

BlackRock reportedly loses over $500 million to Indian-Origin CEO in massive Loan Fraud. Bankim Brahmbhatt, the Indian-origin CEO of US-based telecom firms Broadband Telecom and Bridgevoice, has been accused of orchestrating a large-scale loan fraud that cost lenders, including BlackRock’s private credit unit, over $500 million, according to The Wall Street Journal. Lenders allege that Brahmbhatt’s companies falsified accounts receivable to use as collateral, creating the appearance of strong business activity while secretly moving funds offshore to India and Mauritius.  A lawsuit filed in August claims the firms’ financial strength “existed only on paper.” Brahmbhatt, however, denies any wrongdoing. The alleged scheme began in 2020 when BlackRock’s credit arm, HPS, started lending to one of Brahmbhatt’s financing companies. The loan amount eventually grew to about $430 million by 2024, with French banking giant BNP Paribas also involved in financing the debt. The fraud reportedly came to light in July when HPS staff noticed that emails supposedly from Carriox (another Brahmbhatt-linked company) customers came from fake domains mimicking real telecom firms.  Further checks revealed that customer emails and contracts provided over the past two years were fabricated, and some fake documents dated as far back as 2018. When questioned, Brahmbhatt initially dismissed the concerns but soon stopped responding. When investigators visited his company offices, they reportedly found them shut down. Court filings also allege that assets meant to secure the loans were moved into offshore accounts in India and Mauritius. Brahmbhatt’s companies filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in August — the same day Brahmbhatt himself filed for personal bankruptcy after agreeing to provide a personal guarantee for the loans. Lenders believe he is currently in India.

The probe is reportedly being handled by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California, led by Bill Essayli, a former Republican assemblyman known for his past criticism of BLM. Sources indicated that while the investigation began under the Biden administration, it has accelerated since President Trump took office. The Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation stated that it is not the target of any federal criminal inquiry and emphasized its commitment to transparency and accountability in managing donations. The organization collected over $90 million in 2020 but has faced ongoing scrutiny over how the funds were used. In 2022, reports revealed that BLM leaders purchased a $6 million property in Los Angeles with donor money, sparking public backlash. Co-founder Patrisse Kahn-Cullors resigned shortly after the revelations amid criticism of her real estate purchases. Despite the controversy, BLM leaders have consistently denied wrongdoing. Their most recent tax filings show $28 million in assets as of June 2024. During plenary, Senate President Godswill Akpabio distinguished defilement from rape, insisting that offences involving minors deserve heavier punishment. “Defilement of a minor should be different from that of rape; those involved in defilement should suffer greater punishment. I promise that it should be 20 years if you defile an underage,” Akpabio said, adding that he had witnessed many cases involving children aged five to ten years. He then invited contributions from lawmakers. Senator Adamu Aliero proposed that the minimum sentence for defilement be fixed at 20 years, stressing that offenders should not be given any option of fine. In a stronger recommendation, Senator Sunday Adeleke called for life imprisonment, citing countries like India and Pakistan that treat defilement as a capital offence. He argued that Nigeria must demonstrate zero tolerance for such crimes. After deliberation, the Senate unanimously adopted the motion, resolving that any man or woman who engages in sexual intercourse with a minor will face life imprisonment without the possibility of a fine. Lawmakers noted that the resolution reflects the National Assembly’s determination to protect children and curb the rising cases of sexual violence across the country. The Senate President described the decision as a step toward restoring dignity, justice, and moral responsibility within Nigerian society.

The news of poisoned cough syrups in circulation, with all its clear health dangers is causing stirs in medical and family circles. It has also made relevant regulatory bodies to forewarn parents and healthcare industry professionals to be on the alert. Rumours over the Poisoned Cough Syrups in circulation has made the World Health Organisation (WHO) to issue what it calls a Medical Product Alert. WHO says the concerns centre on three substandard (contaminated) oral liquid medicines containing active ingredients commonly used to relieve symptoms of the common cold, flu, or cough.
