Anambra Government May Replace Council Chairman After His Arrest in U.S. Over $3.3 Million Romance Scam

Article:
The Anambra State Government is reportedly considering replacing Franklin Ikechukwu Nwadialo, the newly elected Chairman of Ogbaru Local Government Area, following his arrest in the United States on serious fraud charges.

According to U.S. authorities, Nwadialo was arrested at a Texas airport and indicted in December 2023 on 14 counts of wire fraud, tied to an elaborate romance scam. He allegedly defrauded victims of up to $2 million by posing as a military officer stationed abroad.

The U.S. Department of Justice further claims that Nwadialo used multiple aliases — including “Giovanni” — on dating sites like Match, Zoosk, and Christian Café, relying on fake photos and emotional appeals to manipulate victims. In one case, he allegedly told a victim he was fined $150,000 by the military, convincing her to send him $2.4 million. Other victims were said to have sent large sums, believing they were helping with his father’s funeral, school fees, or investing in cryptocurrency.

If convicted, Nwadialo faces a potential sentence of up to 20 years in prison.

In Nigeria, the Anambra government has remained largely silent on the scandal. The State’s Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, declined to defend Nwadialo’s actions, stating that because he was elected (not appointed), questions about his conduct lie with those who voted for him. Meanwhile, insiders say there are plans for his deputy to assume his duties if the charges are proven.
