Nnamdi Kanu Rejects Life Sentence, Demands Justice Review — Brother, Kanunta

Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has rejected the life sentence handed to him on terrorism charges, insisting that the judgment has no legal foundation. This was disclosed on Sunday by his brother, Kanunta Kanu, who said that Prince Emmanuel Kanu and Dr. Maxwell Opara visited Kanu at the Sokoto Medium Security Prison following his transfer from DSS custody.

Kanu was convicted for declaring a “sit-at-home” order in the South-East, which the court ruled was enforced through threats and violence. He also received additional 20-year and 5-year concurrent sentences, with the court citing global concerns about death penalties as the reason for not imposing capital punishment.

According to Kanunta, Kanu maintains that no one can be convicted under a repealed law, arguing that the evidence used against him was not listed in the charge sheet nor formally tendered in court. He further said Kanu’s final written address, focused on fair-hearing violations, was ignored.

He reportedly questioned why favorable decisions from courts in Umuahia, Enugu, the Court of Appeal, the UN, and even the Supreme Court—which stated that the laws used against him were repealed—were disregarded.

Kanu thanked supporters for their prayers and solidarity, stating that “injustice to one is injustice to all,” and reaffirmed his stance against unfairness regardless of tribe or religion.

His trial has drawn intense national and international attention, with critics alleging political interference. The court linked his sit-at-home directive to violent incidents, including the killing of former presidential aide Ahmed Gulak, describing Kanu as someone
