Culture Minister Mourns the Passing of Highlife Legend Mike Ejeagha

The Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy, Barrister Hannatu Musa Musawa, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of legendary highlife musician and folklorist, Mike Ejeagha, who died on Friday, June 6, 2025, at the age of 95.

In a statement issued on Saturday in Abuja, Musawa lauded Ejeagha’s immense contributions to Nigerian music and cultural heritage, describing him as “a national treasure whose legacy will resonate for generations.”

“The nation has lost a treasure trove of cultural heritage and musical genius,” the minister said. “Mike Ejeagha’s impact on our musical landscape is immeasurable, and his legacy will endure as a source of inspiration.”

Musawa emphasized Ejeagha’s role in preserving Igbo culture through music, particularly his commitment to oral storytelling traditions. She noted that over 300 of his recordings, now housed in the National Archives of Nigeria, serve as a vital repository of indigenous wisdom.

“His music is more than entertainment—it’s a living archive of our people’s values and history,” she remarked.

Known for his unique ability to weave Igbo proverbs and folklore into rich, melodic compositions, Ejeagha earned acclaim as both a cultural custodian and a master storyteller.

“As we mourn this iconic figure, we also celebrate a life dedicated to educating and uplifting through music,” Musawa added. “May his voice continue to echo in the hearts of Nigerians.”

The Ministry further encouraged citizens to honour Ejeagha’s legacy by supporting initiatives aimed at preserving Nigeria’s diverse cultural traditions.
