Senate Urges FCT Resident Doctors To End Strike, Promises Talks With Wike | Fintter

The Senate Committee on Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Councils and Ancillary Matters has appealed to striking resident doctors in Abuja to suspend their industrial action.

At an emergency meeting on Thursday, the committee, led by Chairman Senator David Jimkuta (Taraba South), met with the leadership of the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD), FCT chapter.

The senators assured the doctors that their concerns were receiving attention and pledged to escalate the matter directly to the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.

“We are pleading with you, please return to work and continue saving lives. I will personally meet with the Minister tomorrow. I am confident that something concrete will come out of it. We cannot stand by while people die because doctors are on strike,” Jimkuta said.

The committee acknowledged the devastating impact of the strike on healthcare delivery and urged the doctors to resume work while negotiations continue.

The FCT chapter of NARD declared an indefinite strike last week over unpaid salary arrears from 2023, unexplained deductions, and failure to upgrade doctors who have completed specialist training but remain on medical officer pay.

The Senate also proposed a joint session with the National Assembly, the FCT health administration, and the doctors’ representatives to facilitate direct talks and secure a lasting resolution.
