Eight Security Officers Killed in Zamfara Bandit Ambush, Worshippers Abducted in Mosque Attack

Eight security personnel—including police officers and members of the Zamfara State Community Protection Guard (CPG), locally known as ‘Askarawa’—were killed on Thursday in an ambush by bandits along the Funtua-Gusau road in Zamfara State.
A security official confirmed the attack to SaharaReporters, describing the assailants as “daredevil bandits” who targeted a convoy of security forces.
Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, also confirmed the deadly ambush in a statement issued in Hausa. The translated message reads:
“Indeed, we belong to Allah and to Him we shall return. We received with great sorrow the news that bandits ambushed and attacked a convoy of police and Community Protection Guard personnel on the Funtua-Gusau road, killing eight officers.
May Allah have mercy on them and grant their families the strength to bear this loss.
We pray for an end to the security crisis in Zamfara, the North, and Nigeria at large.”
Meanwhile, earlier the same day, armed bandits attacked a mosque in Maradawa, Gusau Local Government Area, during early morning (Subhi) prayers. Witnesses said the attackers arrived in large numbers, surrounded the mosque, and abducted several worshippers before fleeing into a nearby forest.
The incident has sparked panic in the community, as residents await news on the fate of those abducted. As of press time, neither security agencies nor the state government had released an official statement on the mosque attack. However, efforts to rescue the victims are reportedly ongoing.
This incident mirrors a similar attack on September 26, 2025, when bandits stormed a mosque in Yandoto, Tsafe Local Government Area, killing at least five worshippers and abducting others.
The spate of attacks underscores the growing insecurity in Zamfara and highlights ongoing challenges faced by both security forces and civilians in the region.
