Power Play in Adamawa: Governor Fintiri Strips Atiku of Waziri Title Amid Political Rift

Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, has officially revoked the revered title of Waziri Adamawa from former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, a move many are interpreting as a politically motivated strike cloaked in administrative reforms.
Though the directive—announced via a June 20, 2025 circular by Mrs. Adama Felicity Mamman, Permanent Secretary of the Department of Chieftaincy Affairs—attributes the decision to indigeneship requirements for council members and traditional titleholders, political observers see it as part of an intensifying rift between Fintiri and Atiku.
The circular stated that “all Kingmakers and Council members in the state must be indigene of their Chiefdoms,” a rule which automatically disqualifies Atiku, hailing from Jada LGA under Ganye Chiefdom, from holding the Waziri title, traditionally reserved for indigenes of the Adamawa Emirate Council—which includes Yola South, Yola North, Girei, and surrounding districts.
The Waziri Adamawa is a powerful and symbolic title, second only to the Lamido of Adamawa, and Atiku’s loss is widely seen as a calculated effort to reduce his influence in state politics.
Their relationship has grown tense since the 2023 elections, where both ran under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) — Atiku for President, Fintiri for Governor. Atiku's rumored alliance-building with rival politician Aishatu Binani has only added fuel to speculation of a deep political divide.
Whether a genuine reform or a strategic blow, the removal of Atiku’s title marks a turning point in Adamawa’s political and traditional leadership landscape.
