Iran Votes to Close Strait of Hormuz After U.S. Strikes Nuclear Sites, Washington Warns of ‘Economic Suicide’

Iran’s parliament has voted in favour of closing the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil route, following a series of U.S. airstrikes on key Iranian nuclear facilities. The decision, reported by The Telegraph, marks a sharp escalation in tensions between Tehran and Washington.

The Strait of Hormuz handles roughly 20% of global oil and gas shipments and serves as a vital passageway for energy exports from major producers like Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Any disruption could spark a surge in oil prices and impede U.S. military operations in the region.

Iran’s Supreme National Security Council is expected to make the final call on the closure. In a statement to the Young Journalist Club, senior Revolutionary Guard commander Esmail Kosari said the move “will be done whenever necessary.”

Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned Tehran of severe consequences. Speaking on FOX News, Rubio said:

“If they do that, it will be another terrible mistake. It’s economic suicide for them... and we retain options to deal with that.”

The vote in Tehran came just hours after President Donald Trump confirmed that the U.S. carried out a full-scale assault on three major Iranian nuclear sitesFordow, Natanz, and Esfahan. In a post shared on his official social media account, Trump declared:

“We have completed our very successful attack on the three nuclear sites... All planes are now outside of Iran airspace. A full payload of bombs was dropped on Fordow. All planes are safely on their way home.”

Despite the strikes, Iranian officials claimed minimal damage, stating that enriched uranium stockpiles and sensitive equipment had already been relocated prior to the attacks.

As global concern grows over the possibility of a broader conflict, the situation in the Gulf remains highly volatile, with potential implications for global oil markets and regional stability.
