PHOTOS: Tinubu Awards National Honour to Bill Gates

President Bola Tinubu has conferred one of Nigeria’s highest national honours—the Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR)—on Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist Bill Gates.
The award ceremony took place Tuesday in Lagos as part of Gates’ visit to Nigeria, where he is engaging with federal and state leaders on key initiatives, including strengthening the country’s primary healthcare system.
Photos from the event show President Tinubu presenting the CFR medal to Gates, with Aliko Dangote—Africa’s richest man and founder of the Dangote Group—also in attendance.
Gates, who serves as chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, is in Nigeria as part of a broader African tour aimed at deepening partnerships across the continent. During his visit, Gates is expected to take part in the Goalkeepers Nigeria event, focusing on the future of innovation in Africa, and to meet with Nigerian scientists and partners contributing to advancements in artificial intelligence and health technology.
According to a statement from the Gates Foundation:
“From Addis Ababa, Gates will travel to Nigeria, where he will meet with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and engage with federal and state leaders to discuss Nigeria’s primary health care reforms.”
The Foundation also noted that its expansion into countries like South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria, and Senegal—with its first African office opened in Ethiopia more than a decade ago—demonstrates a long-term commitment to collaboration on the continent.
Gates’ visit follows a major announcement from the Gates Foundation on May 8, pledging $200 billion over the next 20 years to accelerate progress in global health and development. The pledge is part of Gates’ personal promise to donate the vast majority of his wealth to philanthropic efforts.
