INEC Sets Dates for Ekiti, Osun Governorship Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the dates for the 2026 governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun States.

According to INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, the Ekiti State election will hold on Saturday, June 20, 2026, while the Osun State election is scheduled for Saturday, August 8, 2026.

Speaking on Friday during the swearing-in ceremony of six newly appointed Resident Electoral Commissioners confirmed by the National Assembly, Yakubu detailed the electoral timeline for both states.

For Ekiti State, party primaries are to run from October 20 to November 10, 2025. Political parties are expected to upload nomination forms to the INEC portal by 6:00 p.m. on December 22, 2025, which is 180 days before the election. The final list of candidates will be published on January 18, 2026, with campaigns permitted from January 21, 2026, until 24 hours before the polls.

For Osun State, party primaries will begin on November 24 and end on December 15, 2025. The deadline for uploading nomination forms is February 9, 2026, with the final list of candidates to be released on March 9, 2026. Campaigns will run from March 11, 2026, and conclude a day before the election.

Yakubu added that a detailed timetable and schedule of activities have been published on INEC’s website and social media platforms to guide political parties and inform the public.

He also addressed public concerns over pending bye-elections and the nationwide resumption of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR).

“The number of pending bye-elections has now increased to 17. We are finalising preparations for both the bye-elections and the CVR, especially in view of the upcoming Anambra governorship election,” he said. “Details will be announced soon.”

Yakubu confirmed that INEC is also finalising plans for bye-elections to fill vacant seats in the National and State Houses of Assembly.
