INEC Rejects PDP NEC Meeting Notice, Affirms Wike Ally Anyanwu as National Secretary

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has rejected the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) notice for its planned National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, citing non-compliance with electoral guidelines—particularly the absence of a required co-signature by the party’s National Secretary.

In a letter dated June 13, 2025, and addressed to PDP Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum, INEC stated that the notification did not comply with the 2022 Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties. Specifically, INEC referenced Part 2(12)3 of the guidelines, which mandates that both the National Chairman and National Secretary must jointly sign such notices.

While the PDP submitted the notice on May 30, 2025—meeting the 21-day statutory requirement—it was signed only by Damagum. Senator Samuel Anyanwu, the party’s National Secretary and a close ally of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, did not co-sign the document.

“The Commission draws your attention that the notice is not in compliance… Be guided,” the letter signed by INEC’s Acting Secretary, Hajiya Hau’ru Aminu, read in part.

This comes amid internal power struggles within the PDP, particularly concerning Anyanwu’s position. During the party’s 99th NEC meeting, a report by the party’s National Caucus committee—chaired by Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas—confirmed that INEC continues to recognize Anyanwu as National Secretary, citing a Supreme Court ruling and procedural irregularities in attempts to remove him.

To resolve the dispute, the PDP has inaugurated a three-member verification committee led by Governor Kefas, alongside Governors Dauda Lawal (Zamfara), Peter Mbah (Enugu), and National Legal Adviser Kamaldeen Ajibade (SAN). The committee’s mandate is to formally verify Anyanwu’s status within the party.
