Nigeria Now a Global Laughing Stock Over Senator Natasha’s Trial — Ex-Minister Ezekwesili

Former Minister of Education, Dr. Obiageli Ezekwesili, has condemned the Federal Government over its handling of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s trial, warning that Nigeria is becoming a global embarrassment due to what she called blatant abuse of state power.

In a statement posted to her verified X handle, Ezekwesili criticized the “atrocious” criminal defamation charges filed against Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, who had accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio and former Kogi Governor Yahaya Bello of sexual harassment and threats to her life.

“The incredulous arraignment of Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan by the Federal Government has made our society a laughing stock abroad,” she said, noting that the charges amount to the weaponization of state institutions to silence a woman seeking justice.

She accused the Tinubu administration of enabling Akpabio’s alleged misuse of power, describing the legal process as “stealthy” and unjust. According to her, the senator’s legal team only became aware of the new charges while court proceedings were already underway.

Ezekwesili called on Nigerians to resist what she described as an attempt to intimidate and silence a whistleblower. “It’s shocking that a government would insert itself into such a shameless saga just to protect a Senate President from independent investigation,” she said.

The charges, which include criminal defamation and spreading false information, have sparked outrage among civil society groups and women's rights advocates. Akpoti-Uduaghan is accused of alleging in a TV interview that Akpabio and Bello were plotting to kill her.

“Arrest Senator Natasha? Unbelievable,” Ezekwesili wrote. “What exactly is going on, President Tinubu?”

She concluded her post with a call for solidarity:
“Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan will not walk alone. This case is now beyond her — it is the Federal Government versus the Nigerian people.”
