Sam Aboyeji

Sam Aboyeji is a Nigerian Pentecostal minister, theologian, and church administrator best known as the 5th General Overseer of the Foursquare Gospel Church in Nigeria. He was first elected in 2019 and was re-elected in 2024 for another five-year term.

Early Life and Background

Sam Aboyeji was born on 26 December 1960. Public reports about his rise in ministry describe him as someone who moved from the corporate world into church leadership after years of professional work in finance and the oil sector.

Education

Aboyeji holds a Bachelor’s degree in Theology from LIFE Theological Seminary, Ikorodu, a BSc in Economics from the University of Ilorin, and an MBA in Financial Management and Accounting from the University of Lagos. Public biographies also say he is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Stockbrokers and a member of the Institute of Chartered Mediators and Conciliators.

Career Before Full Time Ministry

Before becoming a full-time pastor, Sam Aboyeji built a career in finance and energy. Public profiles say he started at Nigerian Stockbrokers Limited, later worked with Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria, and eventually left the corporate sector in March 2010 to focus fully on ministry.

Ministry Journey in Foursquare

He joined the Foursquare Gospel Church in Nigeria in 1988 and was ordained as a minister in 2001. Before becoming General Overseer, he served in several leadership roles, including Senior Pastor, District Overseer, Mid-West Region Coordinator, and member of the church’s National Executive Council and mission boards.

Rise to National Leadership

Aboyeji emerged as General Overseer during the church’s special delegates convention in July 2019, succeeding Rev. Felix Meduoye. Reports at the time described his election as a major turning point in Foursquare Nigeria, especially because he came into office with both ministry and corporate leadership experience.

Leadership and Public Influence

As General Overseer, Aboyeji has publicly emphasized evangelism, church planting, youth inclusion, ministerial development, and administrative strengthening. Reports on his leadership also note his interest in national issues, poverty reduction, and ethics in both church and public life.

Public Voice and Debate

I did not find a major personal scandal widely documented against Sam Aboyeji in the sources I checked. Most of the public debate around him has come from his outspoken comments on national and church issues, including his criticism of fake miracles, his call for stronger moral leadership in Nigeria, and his argument that corrupt officials should face stiffer punishment.

Personal Life

Sam Aboyeji is married to Rev. (Mrs.) Olabisi T. Aboyeji, and public biographies say they have four children: Iyanuoluwa, Iyinoluwa, Ifeoluwa, and Ireoluwa. Reports also describe his wife as a minister and trained medical laboratory scientist.

Legacy

Sam Aboyeji is remembered as a pastor who brought together theology, corporate discipline, and denominational leadership. His public story is closely tied to the Foursquare Gospel Church in Nigeria, especially his rise from church worker and district leader to General Overseer, and his continued role as one of the visible Pentecostal leaders in Nigeria today.
