Enoch Adeboye

Enoch Adeboye is a Nigerian pastor, teacher, and author best known as the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God. He is one of the most influential Christian leaders in Nigeria and across Africa, and he also served as president of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria from 1992 to 1995.

Early Life and Background

Enoch Adejare Adeboye was born on 2 March 1942 in Ifewara, Osun State, Nigeria. He came from a very humble family and has often spoken about growing up in deep poverty, even saying he did not wear shoes until he was eighteen. That difficult beginning later became one of the most powerful parts of his life story because it showed how far he rose through education, discipline, and faith.

Education

Adeboye attended Ilesha Grammar School before moving into higher education. He began his university studies at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, but because of the Nigerian Civil War, he completed his bachelor’s degree in Mathematics at the University of Ife in 1967. He later earned a master’s degree in Hydrodynamics in 1969 and a PhD in Applied Mathematics in 1975, both from the University of Lagos.

Career Before Ministry

Before becoming known around the world as a preacher, Enoch Adeboye was an academic. RCCG’s official history says he was a lecturer in Mathematics when he joined the church in 1973. Adeboye joined the Redeemed Christian Church of God in 1973. He first served as an interpreter for the church’s founder, Pa Josiah Akindayomi, translating sermons from Yoruba to English, and he was ordained a pastor in 1975. After the death of Akindayomi, he became the leader of RCCG in 1981, and under his leadership the church expanded from a relatively small Nigerian church into a global Pentecostal movement.

Under Adeboye, RCCG grew into one of the most visible Christian ministries connected to Nigeria, with branches in many countries and a strong global following. His ministry became widely known through large revival meetings, the Holy Ghost Service, books, teachings, and missionary expansion. His influence became so wide that Newsweek listed him among the world’s 50 most powerful people in 2008, a recognition that reflected how far his ministry had reached.

Controversies and Public Criticism

Like many major religious figures, Adeboye’s public life has not been free from controversy. In 2017, he stepped down from direct leadership of RCCG in Nigeria after a controversial governance code for not for profit organizations triggered changes in church leadership structure. Although he remained the worldwide spiritual head, the development caused major national debate and drew intense public attention.

He also faced criticism in 2020 after comments he made while celebrating his wife’s birthday were seen by many people as reinforcing traditional gender roles. Reports said he praised her submissiveness and urged young married women to follow that example, which led to backlash from critics who felt the remarks were outdated.

Another controversy followed his earlier statement that Christians who do not pay tithe might not make heaven. That teaching remained widely debated for years. In October 2024, Adeboye publicly apologized for it and said the statement was wrong and not in the Bible. That apology reopened public debate about tithing, church teaching, and how influential pastors shape Christian belief in Nigeria.

Enoch Adeboye is married to Pastor Foluke Adeboye, and they have four children. Over the years, his family has remained closely associated with his ministry and public identity.

Legacy

Enoch Adeboye’s story is one of poverty, education, faith, and enormous spiritual influence. He is remembered as a man who rose from a poor village background to become one of the best known pastors in Africa and beyond. At the same time, his legacy is also shaped by the debates around some of his teachings and public statements.
