About eight people lost their lives and others were injured due to a powerful electricity surge that caused electrical wires to break at Tudun Wada Pantami area of Gombe metropolis, Gombe State.

Sources told The Guardian that the electric surge occurred in a major transformer in the community which led to breaking of electric wires, sparking and electrocuting the victims.

Our correspondent reports that among those who lost their lives in the tragedy is a permanent secretary in the state government, Mohammed Yusuf Kulani, who is the permanent secretary of the Ministry Of Special Duties.

Eye witnesses said the incident occurred on Friday night when light was restored. According to them, at first, the power came back weak, then it surged strongly, causing the high-tension wire to break, electrocuting anyone who came near the wire.

It was gathered that the victims were rushed to Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe were five people died instantly.

A reliable source told our correspondent that three more persons from the victims died this morning in the hospital.

The state Head of Civil Service, Ahmed Kasimu Abdullahi, confirmed the death of the permanent secretary in the tragedy to The Guardian.

But the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), of the state police headquarters, Buhari Abdullahi, who confirmed the incident said five persons were killed and 13 others injured in the incident.

The Gombe State Police Command regrets to confirm a tragic incident of electrocution that occurred in the early hours of Saturday June 14, 2025, in the Tudun-Wadan Pantami area of Gombe Metropolis, resulting from a high-voltage surge from a nearby electricity transformer.

“Upon receiving the report, officers from the Low-cost Divisional Police Headquarters promptly visited the scene to secure the area and evacuate the victims to Hospital for medical attention”, he said in a press statement.
