BREAKING: Abuja High Court Brings Forward Nnamdi Kanu’s Hearing To September 26 To Treat Application For Release

The Federal High Court in Abuja has rescheduled the hearing of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), to September 26, 2025, to consider his application for release.

The matter, originally fixed for October 10, will now come before Justice James Omotosho, who is handling the main terrorism trial against Kanu. The October date was meant for ruling on a no-case submission filed by Kanu’s legal team after the Federal Government had presented its witnesses and closed its case.

Earlier this month, the court had adjourned a separate application by Kanu’s lawyers requesting that he be moved to the National Hospital for urgent treatment of a life-threatening heart condition. His younger brother, Emmanuel Kanu, supported the motion with a 14-paragraph affidavit, claiming that the medical facilities where Kanu is detained are inadequate.

During that session, Kanu’s counsel, Uchenna Njoku (SAN), told the court that the Federal Government’s lawyers had only just served him a 37-page counter-affidavit, leaving insufficient time for review. The presiding vacation judge, Justice Musa Liman, later declined to continue with the matter as his jurisdiction ended with the close of the judges’ vacation.

Justice Liman, however, directed that the case be transferred to Justice Omotosho, stressing in his notes that the application involves urgent health concerns that could be a matter of life and death.

With the adjustment, the Federal High Court will now hear Kanu’s release application on September 26—two weeks earlier than initially scheduled.
