In the early 2000s, he partnered with Aigboje Aig Imoukhuede to acquire Access Bank, which at the time was a relatively small Nigerian bank. Together, they launched an aggressive transformation strategy focused on expansion, technology, and corporate governance.

Under Wigwe’s leadership, Access Bank grew rapidly through strategic mergers and acquisitions. The most significant milestone came in 2019 when Access Bank merged with Diamond Bank, creating one of Africa’s largest retail banking institutions.
