NDLEA Seizes Illicit Drugs Disguised as Green Tea at Lagos Airport
Sixty-six parcels of loud—a potent strain of cannabis—camouflaged as green tea have been intercepted by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Ikeja, Lagos.
According to a statement signed by Femi Babafemi, NDLEA’s Director of Media and Advocacy, the operation was the result of credible intelligence received prior to the arrival of the consignment at the airport’s cargo wing on May 11, 2025.
The agency had placed the shipment on a watch list and maintained surveillance for more than three weeks. On Thursday, June 5, 2025, NDLEA operatives, along with other stakeholders, conducted a joint examination of the cargo. They discovered that the 62.20kg of loud had been concealed in packages of green tea. The illicit shipment had originated from Thailand and arrived via the United Arab Emirates on an Emirates Airlines flight.
“The seizure made on Thursday, June 5, 2025, was based on credible intelligence received ahead of the consignment’s arrival at the cargo wing of the airport on May 11,” the statement emphasized.
“The NDLEA had watch-listed the shipment and maintained surveillance around it for over three weeks before inviting other stakeholders for a joint examination.”
In a separate operation in Lagos, NDLEA officers intercepted a consignment of 1,665kg of skunk—another strain of cannabis—along the Lekki-Ajah Expressway on June 2, 2025. Two suspects, Gidado Abdulrasaq Ayinde and Obanla Oluwafemi, were arrested in connection with the seizure.
