BORROWED LIFE Episode 5

Aminat (POV)

I felt the walls of my world closing in. Every lie I had told, every choice I had made, had led to this unbearable solitude. Daniel had left, my friends had disappeared, and the family I had abandoned continued to suffer in silence while I chased shadows of a life I thought I deserved. I could no longer face myself in the mirror; the reflection staring back at me was a stranger, a ghost who had stolen everything that once mattered.

One rainy night, I walked the streets alone, letting the downpour soak my clothes, my hair, and my pride. I thought about the sacrifices my mother made, the silent suffering of my siblings, the grief of my father. Guilt pressed on me like a thousand stones. I had wanted more than poverty, more than struggle, but in chasing it, I had destroyed everything I loved. The cold rain mirrored the emptiness inside me, washing away the last remnants of denial.

I whispered apologies into the night, knowing they would never be heard, and finally, the weight of my lies, ambitions, and regrets became unbearable. I took a step forward, and the world seemed to dissolve beneath me. My final escape was not from poverty, nor from shame, but from the unbearable truth of the life I had abandoned.

Sadiya (POV)

The morning revealed the unthinkable. She was gone. Found lifeless by the roadside, her body bearing the silent testament of choices she could never undo. I screamed until my voice broke, until the street swallowed my grief. My daughter, the girl I had raised with hope and love, had escaped everything by escaping life itself.

The family we tried to keep together had lost her forever. The pain was sharper than any sorrow I had known; it tore through me, consuming every quiet moment, every breath, every memory of joy she once brought. My heart ached with a mix of love, anger, and regret. How could I have failed her? How could we have let our sacrifices fall into shadows and lies?

Even as the rain soaked my cheeks, I held her empty place, feeling the echoes of the girl who had once promised to be the light of our family. The mirror she had lied to for so long now reflected only truth: a truth too heavy to survive. And in that reflection, I saw not just her end, but the final cost of ambition, deceit, and abandonment.

The neighborhood whispered about the girl who chased a fake life and paid the ultimate price. The lesson was cruel but undeniable. Love, sacrifice, and family could be abandoned, ignored, or dismissedbbut in the end, they were the anchors of life. Aminat’s story, her lies, and her tragic end became a somber echo in our hearts, a warning of the peril in turning away from truth and the people who love us most.

The mirror she lied to finally reflected reality, cold, unyielding, and eternal.
