Behind the Familiar Door Episode 1

Episode One: What He Wasn’t Looking For

In a modest compound in Akure, two families lived so close that strangers often mistook them for relatives. Their fathers had once worked the same job and never learned how to exist apart. Their mothers borrowed salt, shared recipes, and finished each other’s stories. Their children shared everything else.

Sola and Amina were twelve.

They had grown up side by side same schools, same birthdays, same weekend routines. Nobody ever questioned their closeness. They were just kids. Harmless. Familiar.

On Saturday afternoons, the adults gathered under the orange tree in plastic chairs, conversations flowing easily from fuel scarcity to school fees, from laughter to long complaints. Inside the house, boredom settled like dust.

That afternoon, Sola went into his father’s bedroom looking for a charger.

The room was quiet. The fan was off. On the bed lay his father’s phone.

Unlocked.

Sola hesitated. He knew better than to touch it. But to him, it was just a phone something adults used freely, something ordinary. He picked it up.

He scrolled without purpose. Messages. Notifications. Then a thumbnail appeared one he didn’t mean to open.

The screen changed.

Sola froze.

He didn’t understand what he was seeing, only that it made his chest feel tight and his head feel noisy. His heart beat too fast. Fear came first. Curiosity followed before he could stop it.

That was when the door opened.

Amina stepped in.

“I thought you were looking for a charger,” she said, closing the door behind her.

Sola didn’t answer.

She noticed his face pale, stiff, confused. Then she saw the phone.

Neither of them spoke.

Something had crossed a line neither of them knew existed.
