Democracy Day: FRSC Urges Nigerians to Prioritize Road Safety
As Nigeria marks the 2025 Democracy Day on Thursday, June 12, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has called on citizens to prioritize safety and responsible road use during the celebrations.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, FRSC Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed emphasized the importance of moderation and consideration for others while traveling. He noted that public holidays typically see increased road traffic as people journey to visit friends and family, which can lead to heightened risks when traffic regulations are ignored.
“Democracy Day often witnesses a surge in vehicular movement, which, if not managed with care, can result in avoidable accidents,” Mohammed warned. “We urge everyone to avoid reckless behavior and be mindful that the roads are shared spaces requiring patience and orderliness.”
He reminded the public that the Federal Government has declared June 12 a work-free day for peaceful observance and celebration, and stressed that this spirit of joy should not be marred by preventable tragedies caused by reckless driving.
“As we commemorate this important milestone—26 years of uninterrupted democracy—we call on all road users to obey traffic laws, refrain from driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and avoid driving against traffic,” he said.
Mohammed also reiterated the FRSC’s commitment to ensuring safer roads throughout the holiday and beyond, and extended warm wishes to all Nigerians for a happy and safe Democracy Day.
“Let us remember that only the living can celebrate. Stay safe, drive responsibly,” he concluded.
