Selective Justice? Kano ADC Chairman Questions Why Nnamdi Kanu Is Jailed While Bello Turji Walks Free

The Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Kano State, Alhaji Musa Ungoggo, has sharply criticised the Nigerian government over what he described as selective justice in the country’s security and judicial system.

Speaking to party members and supporters, Ungoggo questioned why the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, remains in detention while notorious bandit kingpin Bello Turji continues to move freely despite being linked to widespread violence in the North-West.

According to Ungoggo, the Federal Government demonstrated remarkable efficiency in the arrest, extradition, prosecution, and incarceration of Kanu, proving that when the state is determined, it can fully deploy its intelligence, security, and legal machinery.

“They arrested Nnamdi Kanu, extradited him to Nigeria, prosecuted him, and today he is in prison. Judgment was passed, and the process was completed,” he said.

However, the ADC chairman expressed concern that the same level of urgency has not been applied to Bello Turji, a feared bandit leader reportedly responsible for killings, kidnappings, and the destruction of communities in Zamfara State, particularly in Shinkafi Local Government Area.

“They have failed to arrest Bello Turji and bring him to Abuja to face justice the same way,” Ungoggo stated. “He is still roaming freely while innocent citizens continue to suffer.”

Ungoggo warned that this disparity sends a dangerous message to Nigerians, suggesting that the rule of law is applied unevenly depending on political, regional, or strategic considerations. He added that such an approach emboldens criminal groups and deepens public mistrust in government institutions.

The remarks come amid worsening insecurity in Nigeria’s North-West, where bandit groups are reported to operate openly in parts of Zamfara, Katsina, and Kaduna States—collecting levies, attacking villages, and displacing thousands of residents.

Ungoggo called on the Federal Government to demonstrate fairness and consistency in its security operations, insisting that justice must be blind and applied equally if Nigeria is to restore confidence in the rule of law and effectively tackle insecurity.
