Guinea Election: Former Coup Leader Mamady Doumbouya Wins Presidency With 86.72%
Guinea’s former coup leader, Mamady Doumbouya, has been declared the winner of the country’s presidential election, according to provisional results released on Tuesday.
The results show Doumbouya secured 86.72% of votes cast in the December 28 election, giving him an outright majority and eliminating the need for a runoff. Turnout was officially put at 80.95%, though participation appeared low in parts of the capital, Conakry.
Doumbouya, a former special forces commander believed to be in his early 40s, seized power in a 2021 coup that removed long-serving president Alpha Condé. His victory grants him a seven-year mandate and marks Guinea’s formal return to civilian rule.
The election was widely expected to favour Doumbouya, with major political figures such as Alpha Condé and opposition leader Cellou Dalein Diallo remaining in exile. He faced eight challengers in a fragmented field.
Although Guinea’s post-coup charter initially barred junta members from contesting elections, those restrictions were removed under a new constitution approved in a September referendum.
Guinea’s top election official, Djenabou Toure, said the Supreme Court has eight days to validate the results in the event of any legal challenges.
Doumbouya has gained popularity by promoting resource nationalism in a country that holds the world’s largest bauxite reserves and vast untapped iron ore deposits at Simandou. His administration has taken steps to assert state control over key mining assets, moves that mirror similar policies in Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger.
However, his rule has drawn criticism from opposition figures and civil society groups, who accuse the government of restricting protests, limiting press freedom and suppressing political dissent. Opposition candidate Faya Lansana Millimono alleged widespread fraud, while the United Nations raised concerns over intimidation and constraints on media freedom during the campaign period.
