Anthony Joshua Crash: Senator Natasha Reacts, Calls for Stronger Road Safety in Nigeria

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has reacted to the tragic road accident involving world-renowned boxing star Anthony Joshua in Ogun State, which claimed the lives of two of his close friends.

The senator, who represents Kogi Central, expressed deep sympathy with Joshua, describing the incident as heartbreaking and unacceptable. She lamented the continued loss of lives on Nigerian highways, attributing it to weak safety enforcement and poor emergency response systems.

Reports indicate that Joshua and three others were travelling from Lagos to Sagamu when their Lexus SUV collided with a stationary truck along the expressway. Joshua reportedly sustained injuries but survived the crash.

In her reaction, Akpoti-Uduaghan said losing close friends in such circumstances is devastating and prayed for strength and comfort for Joshua, as well as eternal rest for the deceased.

Beyond condolences, the lawmaker used the incident to renew calls for urgent national action on road safety. She urged the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to intensify enforcement of traffic regulations, stressing that lax monitoring and poor compliance have contributed significantly to fatal accidents across the country.

She also called on the federal government to establish properly equipped rest stations along major highways to reduce fatigue-related crashes, especially among long-distance drivers. Additionally, she advocated the creation of a dedicated Highway Emergency Rescue Team with ambulances, trauma units, and rapid-response personnel to ensure timely assistance for accident victims.

Akpoti-Uduaghan concluded by urging policymakers to treat road safety as a national emergency, noting that meaningful reforms could save thousands of lives annually, while once again extending her condolences to Anthony Joshua and the families of those who lost their lives.
