Nigerian Army Suspends Officer Retirements Amid Nationwide Security Emergency

The Nigerian Army has suspended all forms of retirement—both mandatory and voluntary—for specific officer groups in response to worsening insecurity across the country. An internal memo dated December 3 and signed by Maj. Gen. E. I. Okoro announced that the decision follows President Bola Tinubu’s November 26 declaration of a nationwide security emergency, which ordered rapid expansion of security agencies.

The suspension affects officers who have failed promotion exams or conversions three times, reached age limits for their ranks, been passed over for promotion three times, or completed the 35-year service threshold. The measure is designed to retain experienced personnel, strengthen operational capacity, and support the military’s expanded nationwide deployment.
