Ondo Civilian Worker Dies After Alleged Torture at Navy Base, Community Demands Independent Probe

Residents of Ilaje Local Government Area in Ondo State are demanding justice after Edema Omagbemi, a young civilian worker, reportedly died following alleged torture by personnel of the Nigerian Navy Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Igbokoda. Omagbemi, who worked closely with the commanding officer, Captain A. Usman, was summoned over an unverified accusation that he stole $9,000.

Eyewitnesses told SaharaReporters that he was chained, beaten, and tortured until he fainted, after which he was taken to a hospital and confirmed dead. Community members say the allegations against him had no credible evidence, noting that no money was found in his possession. The tragedy has sparked outrage, especially as his wife had just given birth days before the incident.

A video shared online by a man identified as Adewale intensified calls for accountability. Efforts to get comments from the Nigerian Navy were unsuccessful, as the Director of Naval Information could not be reached. Community leaders and rights advocates are now calling for an independent investigation to ensure justice is served.
