BREAKING: Abuja Court Grants Omoyele Sowore Bail on Self-Recognizance in Tinubu Defamation, Cyberstalking Case

A Federal High Court in Abuja has granted bail to human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore on self-recognizance in a case filed by the DSS over alleged defamation and cyberstalking of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Justice M. B. Umar approved the bail application presented by Sowore’s lawyer, Marshal Abubakar, who argued that the law does not permit denial of bail based solely on the seriousness of an allegation.

The defence cited constitutional protections and past judicial precedents supporting liberal bail terms, noting that Sowore has no history of jumping bail and has consistently appeared in court. The prosecution opposed the application, insisting on stringent conditions and claiming Sowore might commit further offences. The court rejected these arguments, holding that allegations without evidence cannot override the presumption of innocence.

The judge affirmed that Sowore has complied with all court requirements—including depositing his passport—and ruled that bail cannot be withdrawn based on speculation. Sowore was cautioned to avoid making public comments that could be misinterpreted. The case was adjourned to January 19, 2026.
