The conference, themed “Money Beyond Wealth,” brought together students, professionals, and youth leaders to discuss the moral, social, and economic dimensions of wealth creation.

Obi, while speaking during the event, stated that only money gotten through ethical means can be described as real wealth.

He said, “Money becomes real wealth only when it is earned through ethical means and used to uplift both the individual and society in an edifying manner.”

Obi observed that despite the fraudsters moral misdirection, many of them possess rare intelligence and creativity that, if properly guided, could drive innovation and national development.

“Looking at what they do, there is no doubt that many of them are geniuses. The challenge before us as a society is to redirect them, to channel their ingenuity into productive ventures that will not only dignify them but also edify society,” he said

Lamenting the state of moral decay in the country, Obi attributed much of it to leadership failure and the bad examples set by those in power.

According to a report by the Punch on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, a devastating accident in Edo State has claimed three lives, highlighting ongoing road safety issues in southwestern Nigeria. The incident occurred Monday night near the Ogba River bridge in Oredo Local Government Area, where an SUV driver allegedly lost control and collided with a commercial motorcycle, killing the rider and both passengers instantly.

The tragedy sparked immediate protests from fellow commercial motorcycle operators, who expressed frustration over what they describe as reckless driving by certain motorists. One protester, Abdullahi Usman, voiced the community's anger, stating, "These Yahoo Yahoo boys do not care about another person on the road. The accident was very severe." One of the buildings brought down, located on Egbiadokhai Street, behind Otaru Primary School in Auchi belonged to a wanted cultist known as Too-Believe.

Itua said the building, which served as a regular meeting point for members of the Black Axe Confraternity, yielded alarming evidence with two cut-to-size guns, two black beret caps associated with Black Axe cultists, and one sharp axe found in the house.

According to the statement, “Too-Believe, who is currently on the run, is deeply embedded in cult operations in the region. The recent operation follows the brutal killing of a young man (a barber) in South Ibie, an act tied to rival cult clashes”.

He said another demolished house in Anoguele Street, Iyakpi, South-Ibie, belonged to a cultist named Kuwat, who was said to be a member of the Eiye Confraternity. “When security agents arrived at his residence, he had already fled. Kuwat was named as the main mastermind of the recent killing of the barber”, Itua stated.

The statement further disclosed that “A property in the Ogodomiza Area in Ibie-Nafe belonging to another cult leader was also demolished. The house was earlier raided a day before, which led to the arrest of two young men, Momoh Austin (17) and Joseph Oyazojo (21). The suspects confessed they were brought to the area to engage in cybercrime activities commonly referred to as Yahoo Yahoo.
Another member of the security squad, Eribo Emwanta, added: “We are advising parents and hotel owners to be vigilant. We are cleaning out these communities, and hotels harboring criminals are next.”
Itua said, “The mass demolition of the properties belonging to suspected cultists in Edo State sends a powerful message as Edo authorities enforce the Secret Cult and Similar Activities (Prohibition) Law 2025, which prescribes life imprisonment or a minimum of 21 years for cult membership”.

The law also provides that landlords or property owners who permit cult meetings risk at least 10 years in prison, alongside forfeiture and demolition of the property.
Reaffirming Edo State Government’s zero-tolerance of cultism, with aggressive enforcement and intelligence-led operations across the State, the statement encouraged citizens to report suspicious activities to help secure their communities.

Ifeanyi Eze Okorienta the notorious gang leader known as “Gentle de Yahoo” who was arrested this week by troops of the 34 Artillery Brigade in Imo State has allegedly named Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma as one of the sponsors of violence in parts of the South-East, according to video footage and local reports.

In a clip circulating online after his arrest in Aku-Ihube, Okorienta reportedly claimed he had met with Governor Uzodinma and other unnamed figures, and accused the governor of supporting and financing insurgent activity in the region. In the footage the suspect says, in effect, that if Uzodinma denied the meetings he would “prove” otherwise, language that has since been widely shared on social media.

Security sources told reporters troops recovered weapons and items alleged to link the suspects to violent crimes across Okigwe and nearby communities. Local outlets say the military also recovered firearms, ammunition, motorcycles and various materials allegedly used by the group.

It’s important to stress these are allegations at this stage. The claims in the video come from a suspect in custody and have not been independently verified by an impartial judicial process. There has been no official statement from Governor Uzodinma’s office in response to the footage at the time of writing, and the governor has repeatedly denied previous similar accusations in the past.

Given the gravity of the accusation, proper investigations and due process are essential. If true, the allegations would represent a serious breach of public trust; if false, they would nevertheless contribute to further tension in an already fragile security environment in parts of the South-East. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has warned that the rising cases of internet fraud are worsening visa restrictions for innocent Nigerians abroad.

The EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, said fraudulent practices not only destroy the future of those involved but also tarnish Nigeria’s international image, resulting in stricter travel conditions for law-abiding citizens.

Olukoyede, who was represented by the Chief Superintendent of the EFCC, CSE Coker Oyegunle, gave the charge on Monday at an event in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, organised by the Coalition of Nigerian Youth on Security and Safety Affairs.

His statement was contained in a release issued by the commission on Tuesday.

“The EFCC boss highlighted that internet fraud, money laundering, and economic sabotage cost Nigeria billions of naira annually, undermining national growth and depriving citizens of infrastructure, jobs, and opportunities.

“Beyond the economic damage, he pointed out that the crimes erode Nigeria’s international image and subject innocent Nigerians to stricter visa restrictions abroad,” the statement read.

He urged young people in the South-South and across the country to channel their energy into productive ventures such as digital innovation, entrepreneurship, agriculture, and the creative industry.

He was quoted as saying, “Fraud is not success; it is a trap. Easy come, easy go. Many who follow the path of ‘yahoo-yahoo’ always end up losing their freedom, reputation, and future. According to him, the reality is that global perception is shaped by how Nigeria’s leaders conduct themselves on the international stage.

Kuti argued that until politicians begin to act responsibly and uphold integrity, the nation will continue to struggle with respect from the global community.

He said: “Oh, because of Yahoo boys, they don’t respect Nigerians.

“This narrative we accept about our society is wrong. We know fully well that the only reason nobody respects Nigeria is because of our politicians.

The Nigerian Army has confirmed a raid on the residence of suspected “Unknown Gunmen” leader, Gentle De Yahoo, in Aku, Ihube, Okigwe Local Government Area of Imo State.

Troops of the 34 Brigade, operating under the 82 Division in Owerri, carried out the operation after trekking for nearly four hours to avoid detection. The Army said the raid was executed in a commando-style approach without armoured vehicles.

According to military officials, the troops came under heavy fire from Gentle’s fighters, who shot at them from the building’s roof. Soldiers responded with force and later set the building ablaze after the fighters refused to surrender.

Five members of the gang were confirmed dead, including Gentle’s second-in-command, two male fighters, and two female associates. However, the Army said it has not yet confirmed whether Gentle himself was among those killed.

“At this time, we can confirm the death of his two IC (second-in-command) and four others. Verification is ongoing to determine if Gentle De Yahoo was among those neutralized,” the Army said.

Villagers in the area, long terrorized by the gang, confirmed the death of his deputy but also await confirmation of Gentle’s fate.

The Army stressed that regardless of his status, the raid has significantly weakened the group’s operations in Imo and neighbouring states.

Troops of the 34 Artillery Brigade, working with other security agencies, captured him at a hideout in Aku-Ihube, Okigwe LGA of Imo State. 

Recovered items included an English pistol, 120 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, 25 rounds of 7.62mm NATO, a cartridge, six mobile phones, police and military uniforms, and a German flag. A workshop for dismantling stolen vehicles was also discovered, while 10 motorcycles were destroyed.

Beyond Imo, troops rescued 11 kidnap victims in coordinated operations across Adamawa, Katsina, and Kogi States.

Five victims were freed in Madagali (Adamawa), five in Malumfashi (Katsina), and one in Lokoja (Kogi). Two terrorist were also killed in Katsina, with troops seizing an AK-47 rifle, ammunition, and a motorcycle.

In Benue, soldiers neutralized a violent extremist, recovered charms and a phone, and arrested 11 suspects for armed robbery, gunrunning, and extremism across Benue, Kogi, and Kaduna. In Plateau State, 40 stolen cattle were recovered and returned to their owners.

The Army credited these successes to enhanced collaboration with sister security services and agencies.

Beyond the Imo operation, troops carried out coordinated missions in Adamawa, Katsina, and Kogi States, rescuing 11 kidnap victims. Five persons were freed in Madagali Local Government Area of Adamawa, another five in Malumfashi Local Government Area of Katsina, while two were rescued in Lokoja, Kogi State.

The Army further reported that two terrorists were neutralised in Katsina, with an AK-47 rifle, ammunition, and a motorcycle recovered. In Benue, soldiers killed a violent extremist and seized charms and a mobile phone. Eleven suspects linked to armed robbery, gunrunning, and violent extremism were also arrested across Benue, Kogi, and Kaduna States.

The Yoruba socio-political organisation, Ìgbìmò Májékóbájé Ilé-Yorùbá, has again criticised President Bola Tinubu, accusing him of using propaganda to exaggerate progress while millions of Nigerians continue to suffer.

The union highlighted that Nigeria is facing an unprecedented humanitarian crisis, with widespread hunger forcing citizens into desperate measures.

In a statement released on Tuesday and signed by the group’s Convener, Olusola Badero, and Home Director, Princess Balogun, the union said the dignity of the Yoruba people has been eroded by harsh economic policies, including the removal of the fuel subsidy.

The union further criticised the government’s focus on foreign trips while failing to address hunger, insecurity, and domestic welfare.

The statement read, “We cannot jeopardise the future of our people because Tinubu, who is Yoruba, is confused and has run out of ideas.

“Yoruba people do not joke or compromise their integrity, but today, things have fallen apart. Ọmọ Eleran tí jẹ Egungun — ‘The son of meat sellers is now eating bones.’

“Never in history have we witnessed such dire situations. Married women have been forced into casual relationships, children are turning to internet fraud (‘yahoo yahoo’) due to poverty and anti-people policies, and insecurity has displaced many from their ancestral homes. Farmers can no longer cultivate their lands, which have been seized by terrorists.”

“A government that cannot guarantee the safety of its people has no right to govern through propaganda and deceit.

“A government prioritising negotiations with terrorists instead of neutralising them has failed its fundamental duty. Businesses have collapsed, family heads are ridiculed for their inability to provide, and children are dropping out of school because parents cannot afford education.”

“We urge Nigerians to go out in large numbers to register to vote and to never repeat the mistake of voting for Tinubu and his allies, who have subjected citizens to modern-day slavery through anti-people policies. Tinubu’s only apparent achievement has been imposing more taxes on the people,” the statement added.

Nigerians have often accused the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of showing more speed and precision in prosecuting internet fraudsters, popularly known as Yahoo boys, compared to bringing politically exposed persons to justice.

But EFCC spokesman, Dele Oyewale, dismissed these claims, saying the anti-graft agency applies the same level of commitment to all cases, whether cybercrime, contract fraud, or money laundering.

Speaking in a recent interview on Hard Facts with Nigeria Info FM, Oyewale denied that the EFCC treats politicians with kid gloves, insisting that delays in high-profile cases are largely due to the judicial process.

“As far as the criminal issues are concerned, and adjudication of cases in court and the operation of economic and financial crime, there are no low-hanging fruits; every crime is a crime,” he said.

Oyewale stressed that while internet fraud cases appear to move swiftly, trials involving politically exposed persons often require extensive preparation before charges are filed.

“Last year alone, five former governors were charged to court, five former ministers were charged to court. If you know what goes into the arraignment of one single politically exposed person, you’ll know that a lot of work has gone on.

“It’s the business of the court to determine the resolution of these cases, and if there’s a delay in the resolution, it should not be blamed on EFCC,” he explained.

He emphasised that the Commission’s mandate covers all financial crimes equally but pointed out that it is ultimately the courts, not the EFCC, that decide the pace and outcome of trials.
