Of the noble men and women who stood firm for our liberty and freedom from repressive colonial subjugation, Alhaji Tanko Yakasai is the last man standing. Born a hundred years ago in Kano City, Alhaji Yakasai exemplifies a purposeful life, carving out a meaningful legacy despite humble beginnings.

Disturbed by the injustice and maltreatment he witnessed under colonial rule, he chose to join the fight for Nigeria’s liberation. As a young man, Baba Yakasai channelled his energy into the struggle for the emancipation of his people and the rest of the country as a freedom fighter, journalist, and frontline political activist.

His activism led him to join hands with comrades in the Northern Elements Progressive Union (NEPU), led by the visionary radical Mallam Aminu Kano. Through NEPU, Yakasai and his co-travellers launched a massive awakening campaign in Northern Nigeria, igniting the fire for the Independence struggle.

In the aftermath of Nigeria's Independence in 1960, Yakasai maintained an abiding faith in the country and its development. He played several significant roles, including serving as State Commissioner in Kano under Military Governor Audu Bako and as Special Assistant on National Assembly Liaison to President Shehu Shagari during the Second Republic.

In both youth and old age, Yakasai remains a shining example of commitment to Nigeria. He is a consensus builder who consistently weighs in on the side of national cohesion, peaceful coexistence, and democratic consolidation.

In celebrating Baba Yakasai today, I am not only celebrating the man and his personal achievements, but also a century of dedicated service to freedom and democracy and many years of supporting me and the progressive cause.

FG Projects N34.33trn Revenue for 2026, Sets Exchange Rate at N1,512/$1 in New MTEF

The Federal Executive Council has approved the 2026–2028 Medium-Term Expenditure Framework and Fiscal Strategy Paper, setting Nigeria’s projected revenue for 2026 at N34.33 trillion. According to Budget and Economic Planning Minister Atiku Bagudu, the framework adopts a benchmark oil production target of 2.06 million barrels per day, with a conservative 1.8 million barrels per day used for budgeting. The government also approved an oil price benchmark of $64.85 per barrel and an exchange rate of N1,512/$1, influenced partly by the upcoming 2027 general elections.
The MTEF outlines key expenditure figures, including N15.91 trillion for debt servicing, N15.27 trillion for non-recurrent spending, and a fiscal deficit of N20.1 trillion. Bagudu emphasised ongoing reforms to expand non-oil revenue, strengthen tax administration, and curb leakages in the oil and minerals sectors. The government is also working with the National Assembly to restore a January–December budget cycle, with parts of the 2025 capital expenditure expected to roll over into 2026.

What Nigerians Can Do To Help President Tinubu Make Nigeria Secure Again

It is not an overstatement to say that President Tinubu was created to lead our nation at a time like this. His declaration of a National Security Emergency and the powerful, actionable steps contained therein show that we finally have a leader with the political will and tactical ability to bell the cat that has proven most stubborn and elusive in the past.

For too long, we have had a numbers challenge—i.e., we did not have enough troops to physically secure a population of 235 million with a landmass of almost 1 million square kilometres.

Today, the President has provided strong leadership to address this lacuna in our national security architecture. And right-thinking Nigerians are grateful for this step to address this hateful scourge.

Already, we have seen results in the recent and decent rescue of students in Kebbi State and worshippers in Kwara State. It is certain that more Tinubu wins will come.

This recruitment into our military and paramilitary forces, along with the recall of 100,000 police officers previously on VIP protection detail, is a welcome development and step in the right direction that all Nigerians should support.

I urge our people to enlist in our Army, Airforce, Navy, Police and paramilitary agencies.

Furthermore, President Bola Tinubu taking the issue of State Police to the National Assembly in his National Emergency on Security is the most radically progressive step a Nigerian leader has done in the War on Terror since 1999. I not only commend the President, but also join in appealing to Parliament to make haste and hearken to, as well as hearten to, the President's call.

The Senate President told the retired police officers that the issue would be given a speedy hearing and concurrence with the House of Representatives, which had earlier passed the bill.

The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has assured protesting retired police officers who besieged the gate of the National Assembly over their inclusion in the contributory pension scheme that they would be exited from the scheme.

"Flush out these bandits"- Tinubu orders Police, DSS to storm forests in Nigeria.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared a nationwide security emergency, directing security agencies to intensify operations against terrorists and armed groups hiding in forests across the country.

In a national address on Wednesday, the President ordered the Department of State Services (DSS) to immediately deploy trained forest guards to comb and secure wooded areas where bandits and insurgents are believed to be operating. He also authorised the agency to embark on fresh recruitment to strengthen manpower for the operation.

“There will be no more hiding places for agents of evil,” Tinubu warned, instructing the DSS and police to storm forested regions and flush out criminal elements responsible for recent deadly attacks.

As part of the emergency measures, the President approved the recruitment of an additional 20,000 police personnel, increasing the force to 50,000 officers nationwide. He further directed that National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) camps be used as temporary training facilities to fast-track the process.

Tinubu also ordered the withdrawal of police officers attached to VIPs, saying the personnel would undergo rapid retraining and be redeployed to areas facing heightened security threats.

“My fellow Nigerians, this is a national emergency, and we are responding by deploying more boots on the ground,” he said, urging citizens to support security agencies and report suspicious activities.

The President commended security operatives for securing the release of kidnapped schoolgirls in Kebbi State and worshippers abducted in Kwara, assuring that efforts to rescue remaining hostages including students kidnapped in Niger State would continue.

While praising the Armed Forces for their sacrifices, Tinubu cautioned against indiscipline, collusion, or negligence, stressing that the military must restore peace across all operational zones.

He also encouraged states with established security outfits to intensify local efforts and called on the National Assembly to begin reviewing laws that would allow states to create their own police structures where necessary.

Addressing the long-running clashes between herders and farmers, Tinubu urged herder groups to embrace ranching and take advantage of the newly created Livestock Ministry, warning against continued open grazing and illegal possession of weapons.

The President extended condolences to families affected by recent attacks in Kebbi, Borno, Zamfara, Niger, Yobe, and Kwara, and paid tribute to military personnel who lost their lives, including Brigadier-General Musa Uba.

“Those who want to test our resolve should never mistake our restraint for weakness,” he stated.

Retired Police Officer Collapses as Aggrieved Ex-Police Personnel Protest Unpaid Pensions at National Assembly.

A retired police officer collapsed on Thursday at the National Assembly Complex, Abuja, as hundreds of former Nigeria Police Force personnel staged a mass protest over the non-payment of their pensions and entitlements.

The retirees many frail and elderly gathered at the main gate with placards reading “We Are Dying in Silence,” “Pay Us Our Pensions,” and “35 Years of Service, Nothing to Show.” Their demonstration briefly disrupted movement around the complex as they chanted solidarity songs and accused the Federal Government of abandoning them.

Eyewitnesses told SaharaReporters that a retiree in his late 70s suddenly slumped while chanting. He was revived after first aid was administered by security personnel.

Operating under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) Police Retirees Association, the protesters said they had been reduced to hardship despite serving the country for over three decades. They demanded to be removed from the CPS which they described as exploitative and reinstated into the old Defined Benefits Scheme that guaranteed stable post-service welfare.

Their action follows a similar protest in October, which saw human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore join them in solidarity. Sowore had called the CPS a “fraudulent arrangement” and criticised the government for subjecting retirees to poverty.

“I’m not just fighting for the police; I’m fighting with retired police officers,” Sowore told the crowd. “Those holding your destinies must know Nigerians will not continue to suffer in silence.”

He also urged retirees across all security agencies and the civil service to unite, saying the struggle affects everyone.

Tinubu Seeks Approval for Fresh N1.15trn Domestic Loan Despite Rising Debts.

President Bola Tinubu has requested the National Assembly’s approval to borrow a fresh N1.15 trillion from the domestic debt market to help fund the deficit in the 2025 budget.
