    The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) says 618 people were evacuated after a Kaduna-bound train derailed at Asham on Tuesday.

    According to the NRC, the evacuated included 583 passengers, 15 crew members, 1 medical staff, 8 cleaners, and 11 catering staff.

    At least 7 passengers sustained injuries and were taken to nearby hospitals. A rescue train conveyed other passengers back to Idu and Kubwa stations safely.

    NRC directed its third-party ticketing company to issue immediate refunds and announced that Abuja-Kaduna services are temporarily suspended pending investigation and site recovery.

    A passenger train travelling from Abuja to Kaduna derailed on Tuesday morning, sparking panic and confusion among passengers.

    The incident happened at 11:09 a.m., shortly after departure from Abuja, at KM 49 between Kubwa and Asham stations, according to a statement from the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC).

    What Happened

    Witnesses described the scene as “chaotic,” with passengers scrambling to safety.

    Security operatives, including military personnel, were quickly deployed to assist evacuation.

    Emergency rescue teams and nearby hospitals have been mobilised to respond.

    As of now, no confirmed reports of casualties.

    NRC MD Kayode Opeifa assured that all efforts are being made to move passengers back to Abuja safely.
